Ethan, Christopher Gorham, a struggling writer, hurries to his girlfriend’s house only to be told by her roommate that she has left for the airport. There, moments later, they are reunited and embrace. It is revealed to be an excerpt from Ethan’s latest work, a glimpse that his agent, Carol Kane, later deems unrealistic and not fit for publication.

Disappointed and exhausted from his repeated attempts to break through, Ethan retreats to a local café and, while recording his thoughts into a personal journal, he meets waitress Jesse Alyssa Milano. Her warm, outgoing personality and undeniable charm immediately captivate him, and he asks for her number so they can arrange a date.

Hard on his heels, a handsome patron named Troy Michael Landes enters the café and also asks Jesse on a date, to which she cheerfully agrees. The triangle of affection marks the beginning of a fragile, unfolding dynamic as Ethan and Jesse begin to date, and Jesse’s history—she was once married and felt her ex-husband hadn’t chosen her as the right partner—comes into sharper focus in their conversations.

As their romance grows, Ethan starts writing a new novel, inspired by his burgeoning relationship with Jesse. He also manages the apartment building he lives in simply to keep a roof over his head, a detail that underscores his quieter, more grounded life in contrast with Troy’s polished success as an advertising executive. Despite their differences, both men find themselves drawn to Jesse, and the bond among them deepens in surprising ways.

Conversations with her brother David [Tom Lenk] and her uncle Logan [Beau Bridges] reveal that Jesse is wrestling with a hidden truth she fears revealing to Ethan. The tension surrounding honesty and risk creates a delicate tension that colors every moment they share. After Ethan gathers the courage to propose, Jesse becomes distraught at the thought of exposing her secret and decides to end their relationship, choosing to leave town with Troy in pursuit of a fresh start elsewhere.

Back at his desk, Ethan feels a renewed sense of purpose as he submits his manuscript and receives the hopeful news that it will be published. Yet a missed call from Jesse—while she checks in at the airport—interrupts his celebration. He races to return her call, only to learn that she has turned off her phone. He hurries to her apartment, where a tense reunion awaits.

When he returns home, Jesse waits for him, and she is ready to be honest. Ethan unveils his completed novel, titled Troy Meets Girl, and the pair confronts a key truth: the romance with Troy had been a fictional element of his storytelling, not a real-life pursuit. Jesse then shares her own secret—she cannot have children. He responds with warmth, assuring her that they can adopt if needed, and he asks again for her hand in marriage. This time, she accepts.

The two are married and drive off together in Ethan’s car. Their celebration, however, meets a small setback as the vehicle stalls, requiring the wedding party to lend a hand and push it along, a modest ending that hints at the imperfect, hopeful road ahead for their union.
