What Happens in Nauker: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Nauker (1979) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

In Bhopal, Amar is a wealthy widower who lives with his daughter and their loyal servant, Dayal. He is incessantly nagged by his sister and brother-in-law, who insist that he should remarry — not just for his sake, but for his young daughter’s chance to have a mother’s affection. Exhausted by the pressure, he finally agrees to take a bride. A plan emerges to select between two sisters, Shobha and Sheela, who reside in Bombay. Because Amar has never met either woman, he isn’t sure which one would be the best match. To test them, he travels to Bombay and, in a bold move, swaps places with Dayal so he can study the potential brides while staying undercover.

The party arrives at the prospective in-laws’ home, where Durga, the arrogant and abusive mother-in-law, and her weak, submissive husband preside over their two daughters. Dayal, posing as Amar, is given a spacious, comfortable room, while Amar, living as Dayal, is relegated to the servant’s quarters — a cramped, untidy space with no electricity. Soon Amar realizes a surprising attraction to Geeta, the household servant, but he cannot reveal his true identity or openly propose marriage while he’s in Dayal’s role. Durga grows increasingly suspicious about the strange “servant” and ponders whether he is merely a servant or perhaps a crook, which brings about a string of comic misunderstandings and sharp-witted exchanges.

Meanwhile, Dayal’s younger brother Vijay, who is studying in Bombay and is supported by Dayal, is secretly Sheela’s college boyfriend — a relationship hidden from Sheela’s parents and from Dayal oneself. The truth surfaces when, on a date with Shobha in a club, Dayal accidentally uncovers Vijay’s relationship with Sheela, adding another twist to the masquerade and heightening the comedy, romance, and friction within the household.

Nauker Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Nauker (1979): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Amar decide to swap identities with his servant Dayal?

Amar agrees to remarry due to pressure from his sister and brother-in-law, who want a mother figure for his young daughter. Since he hasn't met the prospective brides (Shobha and Sheela), he creates a plan to evaluate their true character by living among them undercover. By swapping roles with Dayal, he can observe how the sisters treat servants versus the wealthy 'guest,' revealing their genuine personalities rather than their performance for a rich suitor.

Q2

Why does Amar develop feelings for Geeta while posing as Dayal?

While living in the servant's quarters, Amar witnesses Geeta's genuine kindness, humility, and hard work, qualities he doesn't see in the privileged sisters. Her authenticity contrasts sharply with the social pretense around him, making him genuinely connect with her as a person rather than as a potential social match. This sincere connection differs from his original mission of evaluating brides for practical reasons.

Q3

How does Dayal find out about Vijay's secret romance with Sheela?

While on a date with Shobha at a club in Bombay, Dayal (still posing as Amar) accidentally witnesses Vijay, Dayal's own younger brother, together with Sheela. The discovery shocks Dayal because he had no idea his brother was dating one of the prospective brides, adding a dangerous layer to the already complicated masquerade.

Q4

Why does Durga become suspicious of the servant (Amar)?

Durga, the domineering mother-in-law, notices inconsistencies in the behavior and mannerisms of the supposed servant. She questions whether someone merely a servant could carry himself with such dignity and intelligence, or whether he might be a crook or someone hiding their true identity. Her sharp observations create ongoing comic tension and threaten to expose the entire plan.

Q5

Why can't Amar reveal his true identity to Geeta?

Amar cannot reveal his identity because he is actively playing the role of Dayal the servant to maintain the integrity of his test. If he disclosed being the wealthy master, the entire observation plan would collapse, and he would never know if the sisters' kindness was genuine or performed for a rich husband. Additionally, revealing his identity could put Geeta in an uncomfortable position socially.

Q6

What does living in the servant's quarters reveal about the household?

The servant's quarters are cramped, untidy, and lack electricity, harsh conditions that immediately establish the social hierarchy in Durga's house. This living situation forces Amar to experience firsthand how servants are treated, while also giving him intimate access to observe Geeta's daily life and character without the facade of formal courtship.

Q7

Why do Vijay and Sheela keep their relationship hidden?

Vijay, who is studying in Bombay and supported by his brother Dayal, hides his romance with Sheela from both their families. The relationship is secret likely because Sheela's parents (especially the domineering Durga) would not approve of her dating a student dependent on his servant brother's earnings, and Vijay may fear the discovery would affect his education and family dynamics.

Q8

What pressures Amar to consider remarriage?

Amar's sister and brother-in-law constantly nag him about remarrying, arguing that his young daughter needs a mother's love and affection. The persistent family pressure eventually exhausts Amar into agreeing to consider finding a new wife, though he approaches the situation with caution and creative strategy.
