Men Without Wings

Set in the wake of the Nazi regime’s brutal retaliation for the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, the story unfolds in the occupied Republic of Czechoslovakia, with Prague as its uneasy backdrop on 27 May 1942. Nearby, a neighbor named Marta, who works at the local post office, helps look after Jirka, weaving a fragile support network around the young survivor. The airport itself is a hotbed of clandestine activity: a resilient resistance movement operates there, smuggling arms and grenades, and maintaining lines of communication with their allies beyond the front.

At the heart of this hidden struggle is Jana Tomešová, a trusted secretary who has access to sensitive information and provides crucial intelligence to the resistance. Unaware of Marta’s betrayal and driven by a mix of grief and resolve, he retrieves a gun from his hidden stash and heads back toward the airport. The truth about Marta’s loyalty shatters the fragile trust that had sustained the community, and Lom makes a devastating choice: he kills Marta to prevent further harm and helps Jana escape the increasingly dangerous environment.

In a chilling confrontation, the Germans gather the airport workers, threatening to execute them if no one reveals who killed Ullmann. Lom steps forward and claims responsibility, opening fire on Gestapo officers before he himself falls to the soldiers’ guns. The act becomes a final, costly sacrifice in a world where every choice carries deadly consequences.

The closing sequence lingers on a vision from a dying Lom. He imagines a future marked by continued conflict and war crimes, yet also by a glimmer of hope—an eventual triumph symbolized by the Czechoslovak flag rising on a mast as the war finally ends and the people reclaim their sovereignty.
