In 1941, after Nazi Germany attacks the USSR and bombards Moscow and Leningrad, Stalin orders a retaliatory air campaign “Wings over Berlin.” Launching from the airfield on Saaremaa island in the Baltic, crews endure a 7‑hour flight over enemy skies in obsolete planes, with almost no chance of survival if hit. Remarkably, the first units completed the mission and returned safely, unlike many that followed.
