During a night raid on Stuttgart, the Royal Air Force Wellington bomber takes heavy damage and the crew is forced to bail out over the Netherlands near the Zuider Zee. Among the crew is De Jong [Robert Helpmann], and as they come to terms with the crash, five of the six airmen manage to reunite while one remains missing.

The first Dutch citizens they encounter are wary, and the group is greeted by the English-speaking schoolteacher Els Meertens [Pamela Brown], who helps explain the strange situation and the danger of German reprisals. After much debate and some questioning, the Dutch decide to lend their aid despite their fears.

With Dutch civilians backing them, the disguised airmen, led by the pilots, bicycle through the countryside to a football match where they are passed along to the local burgomaster [Hay Petrie]. To their astonishment, they discover their missing crewmate playing for one of the teams. Reunited, they are hidden in a truck carrying supplies to Jo de Vries [Googie Withers], a woman who presents herself as pro-German.

De Vries blames the British for her husband’s supposed death in a bombing raid, a claim she uses to shield the group from German patrols. She hides them in her mansion, and under the cover of an air raid she leads them to a rowing boat. The men row undetected to the sea, but a bridge sentry spots them and the oldest of the airmen, Sir George Corbett [Godfrey Tearle], is seriously wounded. They reach the North Sea and seek shelter in a German rescue buoy.

In the buoy, they manage to take two shot-down enemy aviators as prisoners, though one manages to send a radio message before they are secured. By chance, two British boats arrive first. Because Corbett cannot be moved, the buoy is simply towed back to England with the rest of the crew aboard.

Three months later, Corbett is fully recovered and the crew boards their next mission: a new four-engine heavy bomber, the Short Stirling, ready to take to the skies again.

One of Our Aircraft Is Missing (1942) Plot Questions Answered – Summary FAQ

Explore frequently asked questions about One of Our Aircraft Is Missing (1942) with spoiler-rich answers covering the full plot summary, major story beats, character motivations, hidden details, and ending meaning. This movie summary FAQ helps explain confusing scenes, plot twists, and narrative decisions in clear, searchable detail.

Q1

Why are the Dutch initially reluctant to help the airmen?

A.

The Dutch citizens are wary because helping downed British airmen risks severe German reprisals. Occupied Holland under Nazi rule means entire communities could be executed or sent to concentration camps for aiding the enemy. The locals have heard no official reports about the crash and fear it could be a German trap to identify resistance members.

Earlier scenes show German patrols actively searching the countryside, setting the danger level.

Q2

How does the missing crewman end up at the football match?

A.

The missing airman, after parachuting to safety, wandered into a local village and was taken in by Dutch families. When the other crewmen bicycle to the football match as part of their escape route, they unexpectedly spot their missing crewmate playing for one of the local teams. He had simply integrated into the community while waiting for an opportunity to rejoin them.

Q3

Why does Jo de Vries help the British airmen despite being publicly pro-German?

A.

Jo de Vries uses her pro-German public persona as a cover to protect the airmen from German patrols. She tells the British she blames them for her husband's death in a bombing raid, but this is likely a ruse to explain her proximity to Germans without suspicion. In reality, she harbors the crew in her mansion and leads them to escape during an air raid, demonstrating genuine resistance support.

Q4

How does Sir George Corbett get wounded during the escape?

A.

As the airmen row toward the North Sea during their escape, a bridge sentry spots them and opens fire. Sir George Corbett, the oldest crew member, is seriously wounded in the attack. The injury is severe enough that he cannot be moved when they later reach the rescue buoy, forcing the crew to make difficult decisions about evacuation.

The sentry's presence was foreshadowed as the airmen approach the bridge crossing.

Q5

How do the airmen take enemy aviators as prisoners in the rescue buoy?

A.

After reaching a German rescue buoy in the North Sea, the crew discovers two downed German aviators already inside. The British airmen successfully capture them as prisoners. However, one German manages to send a radio message alerting German forces to their location before being secured, adding urgency to their rescue.

Q6

Why do British boats arrive at the buoy before German forces?

A.

By chance, two British boats reach the German rescue buoy first. This fortunate timing allows the crew to be rescued by friendly forces rather than captured. The German radio message had alerted enemy boats, but the British arrived in time to secure the airmen and take them home.

Q7

Why can't Sir George Corbett be moved from the buoy?

A.

Sir George Corbett's wounds from the bridge sentry are too severe to allow movement. The crew decides they cannot risk transporting him, so instead they simply tow the entire rescue buoy back to England with Corbett inside. This unconventional method ensures he receives proper medical treatment without risking further injury during transfer.

Q8

What does the final scene with the Short Stirling represent?

A.

Three months later, after Corbett has fully recovered, the crew boards a new four-engine heavy bomber called the Short Stirling for their next mission. This marks their return to active duty following the successful escape, showing that the ordeal only strengthened their resolve and bond as a crew.

Q9

How much danger do the Dutch civilians face for helping the airmen?

A.

The Dutch resistance members face extreme danger, including execution or deportation to concentration camps, for aiding British airmen. German reprisal policies meant entire villages could be punished for helping enemies of the Reich. Despite these lethal risks, the Dutch organize safe passage routes, provide shelter, and assist in the escape, demonstrating remarkable courage.

Q10

What role does Else Meertens play in helping the airmen?

A.

Else Meertens is an English-speaking Dutch schoolteacher who serves as the initial contact between the airmen and the local community. She helps explain the dangerous situation to both the British crew and the suspicious Dutch locals, bridging the language gap and advocating for the airmen to receive help despite the risks.
