What Happens in Irul: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Irul (2021) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Alex Parayil Soubin Shahir, a writer and businessman, and his girlfriend Archana Pillai Darshana Rajendran plan a weekend off the grid, with no cell phones, hoping to give Archana a heartfelt surprise. En route, a sudden downpour strands them as their car stalls in the rain, and they seek shelter in a nearby house. The owner of the house, an eccentric figure, welcomes them in and explains that the storm has knocked out the telephone line, offering them a place to stay for the night. As the three settle in, the owner critiques Alex’s book, “Irul,” which draws on a real-life serial killer who murdered five women. The owner argues that the story is too imaginative and not grounded in actual facts, insisting that the killer’s motive was curiosity rather than vengeance against women.

When a power outage plunges the house into darkness, Alex and the owner stumble into the basement to locate the main switch. A gunshot shatters the quiet, and Archana follows the noise to find Alex dragging the unconscious house owner into the living room and binding him, accusing the man of being the serial killer that inspired Alex’s book. The owner insists he is only a thief who broke in to steal and that the phone line was cut by the storm, but Alex refuses to let Archana call the police, revealing that the house belongs to him. He confesses that his plan was to propose to Archana there, yet he was startled by the appearance of a stranger inside his own home and chose to improvise, driven by curiosity more than malice. The tension rises as they exchange conflicting narratives about what happened in the basement, and each recounts small but telling details that challenge the others’ stories.

The atmosphere thickens with suspicion as Archana starts to doubt Alex’s innocence. Unni, who has become involved in the night’s events, reveals troubling inconsistencies: he finds multiple rings in the house, not just the single ring Alex displayed; a gun linked to Alex surfaces; and Archana learns that Alex had purchased a cellphone while he had prohibited her from obtaining one herself. The trio ventures back to the basement to examine a corpse that seems connected to the previous killings, and the atmosphere becomes increasingly volatile. A brutal confrontation erupts: Alex assaults Unni while Archana aims a gun at Alex. At Unni’s provocation, Alex decides to kill and bury him, but Archana fires first, shooting Alex in the stomach as he pleads with her to leave. Wounded, Alex asks Archana to go, but Unni moves to finish what he started, catching Archana off guard and forcing her to pull the trigger herself.

In the morning light, news reports confirm the grim outcome: the bodies of Alex, Archana, and the girl identified as Vani Balan Jipa John have been discovered, with investigators reporting that the killer remains at large. The film closes with the chilling implication that danger still lurks, and the truth behind the night’s events continues to echo in the silence of the storm.

Irul Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Irul (2021): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why did Alex accuse the house owner of being the serial killer?

Alex accused the stranger of being the serial killer from his book because he was caught off guard when he found someone inside his own house. When Alex went to the basement during the power outage, he discovered the intruder and panicked. Rather than revealing the truth about the house being his property (where he planned to propose), Alex improvised by accusing the stranger of being the killer, hoping to control the situation and prevent Archana from learning about his secret plans.

Q2

Who is the real killer in Irul?

The real killer is Unni, the eccentric house owner who welcomed Alex and Archana inside. Throughout the night, he manipulates both Alex and Archana into destroying each other while maintaining an innocent facade. Unni goads Alex into violence against him and thenprovokes Archana into shooting Alex, positioning himself as the final survivor. The morning news confirms three bodies were found, Alex, Archana, and a girl named Vani Balan, while the killer remains at large.

Q3

Why did Alex have a gun and cellphone when he banned Archana from having one?

Alex's possession of both a gun and a cellphone reveals his hypocrisy and deceptive nature. He forbade Archana from bringing a cellphone to maintain his control and keep his surprise proposal secret, yet he secretly bought one himself, likely for his own safety or convenience. The gun belonged to Alex, not the stranger, which raises questions about whether Alex came prepared for confrontation or feared the stranger's presence more than he admitted.

Q4

What are the rings found in the house?

The multiple rings found in the house belong to Unni's previous victims. When Archana discovers more rings than the single one Alex showed, it becomes clear these are trophies from the serial killer's actual murders, five women killed out of curiosity, as Unni explains during his debate with Alex about the book's accuracy. The rings serve as physical evidence connecting Unni to the real killings.

Q5

Why did Archana shoot Alex?

Archana shot Alex because she believed he was the true danger after discovering his lies, his secret ownership of the house, his hidden cellphone, and his gun. When Alex assaults Unni in the basement and threatens to kill and bury him, Archana fires to stop what she sees as imminent murder. However, Unni manipulates the situation further, forcing Archana to fire the fatal shot by positioning himself as her only protection against a wounded but still dangerous Alex.

Q6

Who is Vani Balan in Irul?

Vani Balan is the fifth victim of the serial killer, whose body is discovered in the house alongside Alex and Archana by investigators the next morning. Her identity is revealed through Unni's debate with Alex about the real killer's motives, where he corrects Alex's fictional portrayal by mentioning five women were killed. The discovery of her body in the basement confirms Unni is the actual serial killer who has been operating in the area.

Q7

How does Irul end?

Irul ends tragically with all three main characters dead. After Archana shoots Alex, Unni moves in to finish Alex off, forcing Archana to shoot again, unknowingly killing Alex completely. The next morning, news reports confirm three bodies were found at the house: Alex, Archana, and the girl identified as Vani Balan. The killer remains at large, meaning Unni escaped despite his crimes being exposed to Archana during the confrontation.

Q8

Were the phone lines really cut by the storm?

No, the phone lines were not cut by the storm. The stranger (Unni) cut the phone line himself to isolate Alex and Archana, preventing them from calling for help. This was part of his deliberate setup to have them trapped in the house with him. Alex initially believed the stranger was the serial killer and that the line cut was connected to the killer's work, but the truth is Unni engineered the isolation for his own purposes.

Q9

What did Unni mean by saying the killer's motive was curiosity?

Unni explained that the real serial killer's motive was curiosity rather than vengeance against women. During his debate with Alex about the book Irul, Unni corrects the fictional portrayal by stating the actual killer killed five women out of pure curiosity, not hatred or revenge. This detail becomes significant when Unni is revealed as the actual killer, suggesting he views his murders as experiments or investigations rather than acts of malice.

Q10

Why did Alex keep the house secret from Archana?

Alex kept the house secret because he planned to propose to Archana there. The remote house is actually Alex's property, which he intended to use as a romantic setting for his proposal during their cellphone-free weekend getaway. When he discovered Unni inside, Alex was forced to improvise rather than reveal his surprise, leading to the escalating deception and false accusations.
