Their adventure commenced in Dakar, but it wasn’t until they traversed through Mali that their deception was uncovered by a vigilant policeman. A well-placed bribe saved them from incarceration, allowing the cousins to resume their treacherous quest, this time venturing through Niger. There, they paid to join a ragtag group of travelers who promised to guide them across the perilous expanse of the desert into Libya. The ensemble consisted of weary women and children, exhausted from their own trials; their plight was starkly evident when one companion tragically succumbed to the sweltering heat.

Upon entering Libya, they were met with the harsh realities of civil unrest, as rebels laid in wait to seize the group’s meager belongings. When Moussa’s stash was uncovered, he was forcefully taken away, leaving Seydou in a state of despair. The cousins’ arduous journey plummeted further when they found themselves trapped in a Mafia-run prison, a nightmarish place where countless Africans from across the continent were held against their will. The detainees faced the looming threat of torture, compelling them to relinquish their most precious ties to the outside world—contact information for their loved ones. Determined to protect his family from the grim reality of his situation, Seydou spiraled into submission under the relentless torment of his captors.

The following day, the guards perpetrated a grotesque auction, appraising inmates for their skills and reducing them to mere commodities. In the midst of this desperate setting, Martin, another prisoner, emerged as an unexpected ally. Together, they offered themselves as laborers, forging a bond that provided Seydou with a flicker of hope amid the dark abyss. They shared tales of their families and dreams of a brighter future while laboring tirelessly on a remote estate.

Days turned into a monotonous cycle, marked by random acts of brutality, until the estate’s patriarch finally intervened, opting to release Martin and Seydou by arranging their transport to Tripoli. As Martin left for Naples, Seydou’s heart was ablaze with determination to reunite with Moussa. After working relentlessly for his survival, Seydou located Moussa, whose botched prison escape was tragically marked by a gunshot wound to the leg. This life-threatening injury highlighted the urgency for proper medical attention and intensified Seydou’s resolve to continue their trek toward Europe.

He sought help from Ahmed, a seasoned fixer, and together they braced themselves to tackle the perilous Mediterranean Sea once more. As the financial strain tightened its hold, Seydou faced the daunting challenge of commanding the vessel solo. Under Ahmed’s expert guidance, Seydou learned the arts of navigation, honing his skills in steering and charting a course using merely a compass as their guiding light. Through sheer tenacity, Seydou triumphed over the tumultuous waters, ensuring the safe passage of all aboard to the shores of Sicily. Yet, just as they neared the Italian coast, the celebratory atmosphere turned grim with the jarring approach of an Italian coast guard helicopter. The joy that once filled the air was now eclipsed by uncertainty, as Seydou and his fellow travelers found themselves at the mercy of the Italian authorities, their destinies hanging precariously in the balance.
