Read the complete plot breakdown of Dead Sea (2024), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

Kaya, a young woman in her early twenties, has led a life filled with both joy and hardship. Having lost her mother at sea, she now spends much of her time balancing work with caring for her father and younger brother. Despite her responsibilities, Kaya remains someone who once embraced life to the fullest. Her closest friend, Tessa, with whom she shares a strong bond, decides unexpectedly to go jet-skiing with Tessa’s boyfriend, Julian, and a new acquaintance named Xander. Though Kaya is initially hesitant because she needs to be home before sunset, she ultimately gives in to her friend’s wish for spontaneity, eager to live a little.

The group plans a short trip to a nearby island, intending to enjoy a few hours of jet-skiing, swimming, and sharing personal stories. On the island, they revel in the clear, sparkling water while opening up about their lives. Kaya talks about how her world changed after her mother’s passing and how her father has struggled ever since. Tessa shares her frustrations about her father, a former marine, who disapproves of her relationship with Julian. During their time together, Kaya forms a friendship with Xander, which blossoms into a tender kiss, adding a moment of happiness to their otherwise carefree day.

However, their joy is tragically short-lived. A devastating accident occurs, taking the life of Julian and sinking their jet-skis to the ocean floor. The accident leaves them stranded in the vast, shark-infested waters, far from help. Their situation becomes increasingly desperate — with no boat, no working phones or walkie-talkies, and predators lurking beneath. Luckily, their cries for help are heard by a passing boat, owned by Rey, a local fisherman and boat owner, who rescues them from drowning and takes them aboard his vessel.

Rey quickly appears helpful as he tends to their wounds and offers to call for assistance, promising to send help so Xander and Tessa can get to the hospital. But as the story unfolds, it becomes clear that Rey is not the kind stranger he claims to be. Behind his facade is a darker, sinister nature. Rey knocks Kaya unconscious with a chloroform-soaked tissue and traps her in the crew quarters below deck, along with Tessa. The chilling evidence, including bloodstains and the word “help” carved into the walls, suggests that Rey is involved in human trafficking, likely hunting for migrant women and young girls in his remote corner of the sea.

Their nightmare deepens when Curtis Hunt, a middle-aged man revealed to be an organ trafficker, steps onto Rey’s boat. Curtis confesses that he is in desperate need of a liver donor for the daughter of a wealthy lawyer and seeks to buy their lives for a considerable sum. Rey sells Xander, Tessa, and Kaya to Curtis for $10,000, and Curtis begins his brutal work—removing Xander’s liver while he is conscious before feeding his body to the sharks. With Xander eliminated, Curtis then targets Tessa, planning to harvest her organs once her blood type matches with one of his affluent clients.

Kaya endures hours of torment before mustering the strength to escape. She breaks out of the crew quarters, where she finds evidence of previous victims, including blood stains and the word “help” carved into the walls. Using her resourcefulness, Kaya manages to reach the front of the boat to signal for help, but her calls go unanswered. She then finds a fishing hook, shoots Curtis in the gut, and rescues Tessa, who is badly injured but still alive. Determined to ensure their escape, Kaya sabotages Rey’s boat to prevent him from pursuing them.

As they swim to safety, Tessa’s injuries slow them down, and she urges Kaya to leave her behind to survive. Despite her desire to stay and save her friend, Kaya promises to return with authorities and the Coast Guard. Reaching Curtis’s boat once again, Kaya makes a second mayday call, leveraging her GPS beacon. Just as rescue seems imminent, Rey reappears, stabbing Kaya in the abdomen with a pocket knife. Despite being gravely wounded, Kaya summons her remaining strength, fires a flare pistol at Rey, and throws her beacon into the ocean, hoping for help.

Hours pass before a police boat spots Curtis’s yacht and rescues Kaya from her injuries. She is rushed to the hospital, where she receives treatment for her wounds. Miraculously, Tessa is also found alive, clutching a flotation ring, giving hope amid the horror. The story ends with Kaya’s resilience and bravery shining through, as she faces the aftermath of her harrowing ordeal and begins her journey toward healing from the traumatic events she endured.
