Chen Nian Dongyu Zhou is a high school student who finds herself at the center of a brutal bullying cycle after her classmate Hu Xiaodie dies by suicide following relentless harassment. The school’s crown of cruelty rests on Wei Lai, the so‑called queen bee, and her cadre, who torment Chen Nian and spread painful rumors about her family. When Chen Nian witnesses Liu Beishan, known to peers as “Xiao Bei” Jackson Yee, being assaulted by rival thugs, she tries to call the police but becomes another target; the aggressors force her to kiss Xiao Bei as a degrading display of power.
As the harassment intensifies, police detectives Zheng Ye Fang Yin and Lao Yang Jue Huang investigate Hu Xiaodie’s death and uncover that Chen Nian has reported being bullied. Wei Lai and her friends are suspended, but the school’s climate of fear remains. In a moment of desperation, the trio of expelled bullies chases Chen Nian one day with boxcutters and a cage of rats, pushing her to seek shelter at Xiao Bei’s home. He agrees to protect her as she studies for the college entrance exam, walking her to and from school each day, and the two gradually grow closer.
Xiao Bei is selected for a police lineup and ends up stuck in the station, leaving Chen Nian unprotected in the hallways. The bullies close in: they cut her hair, beat her, and strip her clothes, filming the assault for humiliation. When Xiao Bei is released, he rushes to a battered Chen Nian, helping her shave her head and, in solidarity, shaving his own.
On the day of the exam, heavy rain triggers a landslide. While rescue crews work, Wei Lai’s body is found, shifting the case into a deadly pressure point. After the first day of the two‑day tests, detectives question Chen Nian as a primary suspect in Wei Lai’s death. They press her about why she didn’t come to them earlier after the video surfaced; she explains that she simply wanted to finish the exam and move away to Beijing for college.
As police escort Chen Nian home, Xiao Bei grabs her and they run. He explains that the only way for her to reach college is if he takes the blame for Wei Lai’s death. Reluctantly, Chen Nian agrees, and he pretends to assault her, which leads to his arrest. A flashback reveals Wei Lai begging Chen Nian not to report the video to the police; when Chen Nian pushes her away in anger, Wei Lai falls and dies.
In the present, Chen Nian and Xiao Bei are interrogated, but they maintain that their only meeting occurred during the earlier assault. After Chen Nian learns her exam score, a detective reveals that Xiao Bei has been sentenced to death, confessing only to secure a lighter outcome for them both. The detective admits he lied to prompt the confession, and the two eventually accept lighter sentences, ending up in jail.
Years later, Chen Nian works as a teacher and notices a distressed child walking home under Xiao Bei’s quiet presence behind them. The closing sequence explains government policies enacted since the incident to curb bullying in schools and to punish bullies more severely, culminating in a plea for everyone to take responsibility for the safety and well‑being of the youth.
