When a neighbor named Grace loses her water source, she tells Kendal she’s considering joining Carson, hoping he can provide medicine that might help Dean. Kendal remains skeptical, wary of any deal that would trade freedom for survival, and she chooses caution over trust when Carson arrives without warning.

Carson reveals his ruthlessness in a brutal display: he kills Gabriel’s entire family, justifying the act by saying that only the strong—those young or infirm enough to be saved in the current scarce moment—deserve a chance. The sight of such merciless control horrifies Kendal, who finds a temporary ally in the wake of violence even as she hides from the warlord’s men. Dean’s plan to escape grows more urgent, and Kendal discovers a nearly repaired Cessna that could carry them all away; all they need is a distributor cap to power it.
