A luxurious Christmas yachting trip in the Caribbean brings comfort, flirtation, and danger for a wealthy couple, Jack and Jennifer, whose voyage is shared with a handsome crew member. When Manuel catches Jennifer’s eye and also draws the attention of her friend Gail, the mood aboard grows tense and adventurous. Yet Manuel’s mood darkens as his angry ex-girlfriend Maria places a lingering curse on him, making him withdrawn and volatile, unable to reliably fulfill even the simplest requests. The strain between Manuel and Jack becomes palpable, and the crewman’s temper flares whenever Jack pushes him too far.
The situation escalates when Captain Richards confronts Manuel about his behavior. Unable to cope under the captain’s gaze, Manuel quits in a fit, tossing down a rag as he storms off the galley. The rag accidentally lands on a gas flame, sparking a fire that engulfs the yacht. The crew fights to control the blaze with extinguishers, but the blaze proves too intense, forcing the passengers and crew to abandon ship. A brutal night follows as lifeboats are tossed about in a storm, and the sea itself seems determined to pull them apart. The ship goes down, and the survivors are scattered.
Washing ashore on a deserted island, Jennifer is utterly alone until she discovers Captain Richards’ body drifting in the surf. Manuel materializes soon after and makes a second, imperfect effort to revive the captain. They shoulder the grim task of burying Richards and, under Manuel’s practical guidance, begin to build a shelter and search for food. In a few days’ time, a beacon of hope appears when Manuel spots Jack alive in the water and ferries him back to Jennifer’s camp. With Jack’s arrival, the circle of survivors expands to three, and the grim news settles in: Gail and their friend Bill are dead, leaving the trio to navigate a fragile fate together.
Initially, Jack expresses gratitude for Manuel’s help, but suspicion soon arises. He believes Manuel has designs on Jennifer and declares the man an enemy, vowing to ruin him once they’re off the island. Jennifer finds herself torn between loyalty to Jack and the necessity of Manuel’s companionship to stay alive. A fierce sense of pride underpins Jack, who insists he can provide for them both, yet it becomes clear that he cannot shoulder that burden alone. The relationship between Jack and Jennifer begins to fray as dependence, fear, and desire pull them in different directions.
Tensions flare when Jack steals Manuel’s goggles to go fishing. Manuel responds with a menacing threat, and Jennifer tries to calm the escalating conflict. The moment the two men are alone after a fight, Manuel corners Jennifer, and what follows is catastrophic: he attempts to force himself on her as revenge for Jack’s trespass. Jennifer, though initially resisting, is overwhelmed by the moment and yields to him, after which Manuel confesses his love. When Jack returns, Jennifer’s awkward confession about the encounter only widens the rift, and Jack’s furious rejection makes their shared future feel even more fragile.
A new opportunity to escape arises when Jack discovers a boat resting on the ocean floor. He drags it ashore and begins to repair it, hoping to flee the island with Jennifer. That night, Manuel and Jennifer share a moonlit swim while Jack watches from a distance, and the seeds of a plan to steal the boat are planted. The next morning, the trio executes the plan and sets sail. Their escape is short-lived, however, as the boat begins to take on water and sink, forcing them back to the island. It becomes evident that Jack’s plan was really a trap to drown them all, setting the stage for a brutal confrontation.
A fierce struggle ensues when Jack attacks Manuel with a spear. Jennifer intervenes, pinning Jack in place as Manuel fights to reclaim the upper hand. In the climactic mêlée, Manuel’s balance falters, and he falls, impaling himself on one of Jack’s spears. Around the same moment, Maria’s lingering influence surfaces in a voodoo ritual: she performs a ceremony that impales Manuel’s effigy on a spike, a symbolic act that underscored the island’s deadly interplay of desire, vengeance, and fate.
One year later, a visiting yachting family anchors near the same island and begins to explore. They find Jennifer sleeping in a hut, still haunted by the events that drove her life to this isolated shore. She leaves with the newcomers, not mentioning that Jack remains on the island. Jack, still alive in the wilderness and fishing near the shore, catches sight of Jennifer departing. As the family’s boat slips away, Jennifer’s final gesture—no longer chasing revenge, but moving forward with someone new—speaks to a life that continues beyond the events that bound them. Jack, left behind, is ultimately abandoned on the island, and his fate remains unresolved, hanging in the balance of this sun-soaked, perilous paradise.
