As they traverse through Mali, their deception is discovered by a vigilant policeman. Fortunately, with a well-placed bribe, Seydou and Moussa manage to escape in captivity, allowing them to continue their dangerous quest.

In Niger, the cousins pay to join a ragtag group of travelers that pledges to guide them across the desert into Libya. This mixed group includes weary women and children, showcasing the desperate and harrowing nature of their shared plight.

During their arduous journey across the desert, one of their fellow travelers succumbs to the searing heat. This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the perilous conditions they all face.

Upon entering Libya, Seydou and Moussa are confronted with a chaotic reality marked by civil unrest. They quickly become targets of rebels who seize whatever few possessions the group has.

Moussa's stash is discovered by rebels, leading to his forceful disappearance. This moment plunges Seydou into despair, as he is left to grapple with the uncertain fate of his cousin in dangerous conditions.

Seydou finds himself trapped in a Mafia-run prison, a dreadful environment where countless Africans are held against their will. Here, the threat of torture looms large as detainees are pressured to surrender contact information for their families.

Amidst the hardship, Seydou meets Martin, another imprisoned soul who becomes an ally. Together, they share tales of hope and family while working tirelessly under cruel conditions, finding solace in their shared dreams for a better life.

After enduring brutality, the estate's patriarch intervenes and arranges for the release of Seydou and Martin. As Martin prepares to leave for Naples, Seydou's determination to reunite with Moussa ignites a new sense of hope.

Just as they approach the Italian coast, the initial joy of reaching safety is disrupted by the arrival of an Italian coast guard helicopter. The reality of uncertain futures looms, placing Seydou and his companions in a precarious situation.
