The film begins with Saumya at the Devipur village police station in Uttarakhand, where she boldly accuses Dhruv of attempting to murder her. From there, the narrative flashes back to an earlier incident involving police officer Vidya Jyothi, affectionately known as VJ. She receives a call concerning domestic abuse, but upon her arrival, the situation is dismissed as a false alarm. It is only when Maaji, a maternal figure to Saumya, discreetly reveals that she made the call out of genuine concern for Saumya, who endures brutal maltreatment from her husband Dhruv, that the gravity of the situation comes to light. Despite her suffering, Saumya chooses to remain silent, a decision borne from fear and societal pressures.
Through Maaji’s poignant storytelling, we uncover the backstory of Dhruv, the privileged son of a minister and owner of a paragliding business in Devipur, and his relationship with Saumya, who initially fell for him. Complicating matters, Saumya’s identical twin sister, Shailee, harbors an intense infatuation for Dhruv as well. Having always received the majority of attention due to Shailee’s numerous phobias and mental health battles since their mother’s demise, Saumya becomes the target of Shailee’s resentment as they come of age. Although Dhruv and Shailee begin dating, his father pushes him to seek a more suitable partner, leading Dhruv to wed Saumya even as Shailee continues to pursue him, escalating tensions within the family.
As the story unfolds, VJ uncovers the rivalry between the sisters and the extent of Dhruv’s abusive tendencies. Maaji recounts harrowing incidents where Saumya suffers at the hands of her husband. Whenever Saumya broaches the subject of wanting children, Dhruv’s temper explodes, culminating in frightening episodes of physical abuse, including one where he violently pushes her down a staircase, leaving her unconscious. Despite this, Saumya initially supports Dhruv’s claim that it was merely an accident, revealing her deep entanglement in this toxic cycle.
In a desperate bid for a fresh start, Saumya suggests a paragliding trip, hoping to recreate their initial romantic moments. However, Maaji takes it upon herself to quietly gather evidence against Dhruv, who disregards her attempts to warn him. During a colorful Holi celebration, moments between Shailee and Dhruv ignite Saumya’s jealousy, leading her to instigate a paragliding adventure. In a dire turn of events, Dhruv’s harness malfunctions mid-air, but they narrowly avoid disaster. In the aftermath, Saumya accuses Dhruv of attempted murder, claiming he deliberately tampered with her harness to push her out. Armed with compelling evidence, he is pronounced guilty of both attempted murder and domestic violence, receiving a substantial prison sentence.
However, the plot thickens when VJ begins to detect inconsistencies within the unfolding drama. It is revealed that Saumya and Shailee had orchestrated an elaborate scheme, switching places before the paragliding incident. It was Shailee who sabotaged the harness and then aligned herself with Saumya in accusing Dhruv. When confronted by VJ, Shailee defends their actions, emphasizing the family’s dark history of hidden domestic abuse, while Saumya grapples with her own silence in the face of suffering. She openly admits that failing to leave her marriage out of a sense of defeat against Shailee was a grave mistake.
As VJ contemplates the broader implications of domestic violence as a societal issue rather than just a private family matter, she finds herself torn. Convinced of the complexities surrounding Dhruv’s accountability, VJ withdraws her appeal, embodying a bittersweet understanding that sometimes the law does not capture the entirety of justice. The narrative comes full circle as Saumya ultimately finds the closure she so desperately seeks, leaving viewers to ponder the emotional and moral dilemmas intertwined in her tale.
