As four groomsmen—Buzz, Teddy, Sol, and Billy—prepare for a wedding in their finest attire, they are blissfully unaware of the tumult that lies ahead. Among them, Billy is a struggling actor with a flair for method acting who harbors a secret passion for Shakespearean sonnets. What his friends don’t know is that he has been moonlighting as a bank robber, theatrically reciting Shakespeare during daring heists.
The group gathers at the prison to welcome Jesse, who is about to be released after three years for a crime steeped in secrecy. Tensions flare as Sol confronts Jesse, stemming from errors made during Jesse’s representation, which led to his wrongful imprisonment. After they leave the prison, Billy’s true nature is revealed when he takes over a bank, reciting one of his beloved Shakespearean scenes in the process.
Veteran Buzz steps in to stop the robbery, unveiling Billy’s flamboyant criminal activities. The other groomsmen inadvertently stumble into the unfolding chaos, resulting in a haphazard hostage situation that quickly attracts law enforcement attention. The police are soon confronted with the troubling scenario of five participants, with each potentially facing a lengthy incarceration.
Unexpectedly, the dynamics shift as hostages and their captors begin to connect on a human level. Amidst the turmoil, Billy’s father, Sheriff Philips, appears, pleading with his son to surrender and come to terms with his failures. Confronted by decades of neglect, Billy challenges his father, demanding accountability. Meanwhile, inside the bank, Gonzo, a Vietnam veteran held captive, finds a kindred spirit in Buzz, as they bond over shared experiences.
As the crisis deepens, Buzz gives Gonzo his cherished military jacket, embodying their mutual pain and regret. Outside, FBI agent Hoover maintains a cold, ruthless stance toward the hostages and is determined to execute the robbers once they surrender.
When Billy reflects on his father’s parental shortcomings, he starts recognizing that his challenges are not his alone. He chooses to release some hostages, including Gonzo, who remains loyal to his captors. The liberated hostages, now sharing an unexpected camaraderie, collectively refuse to identify their captors, solidifying a bond that blurs the lines of captivity.
As the makeshift ceremony unfolds within the bank, bringing a humorous twist to an already bizarre situation, an unsuspecting priest—revealed to be a federal agent—creates instant chaos when Teddy and Buzz get caught in the crossfire. Injured but determined to continue, Teddy undergoes a transformation from a passive accomplice to an emboldened outlaw. The gang hurriedly concocts an escape plan while Sol tries to bargain with Hoover.
When Sol re-enters the bank to secure a promise of safe passage, he inadvertently seals his fate by trusting Hoover, who ultimately breaks the agreement and orders an all-out assault on the gang and hostages. Undaunted, Sol engineers a dramatic escape utilizing a massive American flag for cover, leaving the snipers uncertain about firing amidst the confusion.
In a poignant exchange, Sol sincerely apologizes to Jesse for his role in their predicament, ultimately deciding to surrender to save them. Tragically, as the bus makes its hasty exit, Sol is struck down by sniper fire. Sheriff Philips steps in, momentarily halting the agents and allowing Billy a slim chance to escape.
As the gang’s perilous journey continues, they find themselves in a frantic chase, evading federal agents toward a nearby airport. In a bold stroke, Gonzo shows up in a military helicopter, providing Jesse and Hope with an exhilarating escape route.
However, Buzz and Billy cannot escape this fate and must confront the agents who have pursued them relentlessly. In a brutal final showdown, both face their destinies, but not before Buzz gets his revenge on Hoover.
Years later, Jesse and Hope share a heartfelt moment on a sunlit beach in Mexico with their young son, a potent reminder that hope can blossom even amid the darkest of times.
