In Chicago, Harper Stewart is an up-and-coming author whose debut novel, Unfinished Business, earns attention from the high-profile circle around Oprah’s Book Club. His devoted girlfriend, Robyn, grows increasingly frustrated by his reluctance to commit to a settled future together. The tension between ambition and relationship expectation threads through Harper’s days, coloring his choices and the conversations he has with friends who know him best.

Harper travels to New York City for a weekend with old college friends, a trip that culminates in the wedding of Lance Sullivan—a running back for the New York Giants—and Mia Morgan. Harper serves as best man and reconnects with childhood confidants Murch (Julian Murchison) and Jordan Armstrong, who circulate an advance copy of Harper’s novel within their inner circle — a copy that ends up shaping the very discussions that will unfold during the weekend. The group privately debates the personalities and loyalties that have evolved since their college days, with opinions about Murch’s domineering girlfriend Shelby, and about Quentin Spivey who struggles to settle into a steady job.

Flashbacks to their college years reveal the seeds of the present-day drama: Lance met Mia through Harper, while Harper himself almost slept with Jordan. Quentin relentlessly taunts Lance about Mia, convinced she has never been with another man. Harper becomes anxious that Lance will someday discover the truth—that his friend’s party of secrets includes a one-night stand between Harper and Mia. As the weekend progresses, old attractions resurface in tentative ways: Jordan admits she wants to sleep with Harper that very night, and then Robyn’s arrival for the wedding the following day adds a new layer of moral complexity to Harper’s decisions.

The next day, Robyn awaits at the airport and senses something is wrong as Harper confesses his injuries. She is disappointed, yet she agrees to help him salvage the wedding, setting in motion a plan to confront the chaos with a mixture of honesty and support. The bridal party’s preparations continue, and when they arrive at the church, Murch ends his relationship with Shelby. Lance arrives too, and his friends race against time to stop him from telling his parents the wedding is off.

Harper, who isn’t as devout as Lance, asks him to pray—a moment that becomes a turning point. Robyn and Jordan tend to Mia, who remains largely oblivious to the social fallout around her. Harper focuses on Lance, persuading him to believe in the enduring power of love and reconciliation, even for a couple whose past is complicated by betrayal.
