Two brothers, Moke and JD, Josh Brolin as Moke Munger and Peter Dinklage as Jady Munger, pull off a warehouse heist that threatens to redefine everything they’ve ever known. JD ends up caught and spends years in prison, where he crosses paths with an Officer Farful, Brendan Fraser, and strikes a tense deal that will pull the siblings deeper into a dangerous game they never meant to play.

Farful returns to the fold, beating JD at his place and pressuring him for the emeralds, though nothing concrete is found. The brothers decide to embark on a road trip in search of the missing stones, hoping a change of scenery will bring answers or at least a way out. The journey leads them to Bethesda, where JD had connected with an environmentalist online, and there they encounter an orangutan smoking a cigarette, a surreal moment that signals how far their path has wandered from any ordinary plan.

The plot thickens when they check into a hotel and unexpectedly reunite with their mother, Cath Munger, Glenn Close who abandoned them thirty years earlier for a cartel-like heist. She recounts how she evaded the police for years after her partner Glen swallowed emeralds before dying of a heart condition. She buried him in an undisclosed location, fled the country, and stayed on the run until reconnecting with JD while he was incarcerated. She claims to be dying, with less than a year to live, and her revelation pushes the brothers toward one last gambit to recover the buried emeralds, now valued at around $4 million.

As the plan takes shape, Farful tracks JD to Bethesda using a GPS-enabled phone given to him to stay in touch with the brothers, while Cath offers hard-won wisdom about loyalty, risk, and what they’re willing to sacrifice for fortune. The trio—mother and two sons—procure an excavator and head toward the burial site to retrieve Glen’s body and the emeralds, but they’re spotted by golfers and barely escape. They move the body to a different location, and Moke uncovers a troubling detail: JD had impersonated the “Labor and Employment Bureau” to get him fired from his job, a deceit that strains trust to the breaking point.

A heated confrontation erupts, but Farful arrives with a gun, reasserting his demand for the emeralds and sealing their fates in a dangerous standoff. The mother seizes the emeralds and flees, triggering a frantic chase that ends with a tense confrontation in an abandoned mall. Farful appears again with a gun and manages to secure the bag of cash, but JD’s planted pepper spray erupts into his eyes, plunging the scene into chaos. As gunshots echo, the mall is surrounded by police, and Cath tries to protect her new plan by handing off the danger to others. In a devastating moment, a Christmas tree crashes down, and Farful dies in the midst of the mayhem.

With legal consequences closing in, Cath surrenders and leaves the brothers to navigate the fallout. Moke meets with Judge Farful, M. Emmet Walsh, to exchange cash for his brother’s gun, a symbolic move that ties the case to the fingerprints on the weapon. Thanksgiving returns to a fragile normalcy as Moke shares a quiet dinner with his family, while JD reveals he’s consulted a lawyer and set up a trust under Moke’s daughter’s name for a $2 million windfall, throwing a new, complex layer over family loyalty and the meaning of “rich.”

A year later, the brothers visit Cath in jail, where she sees her new granddaughter, Blueberry, adding another facet to the family’s complicated legacy. Outside, JD opens his hand to reveal two emeralds, suggesting Cath had secretly swallowed a third long before, leaving the truth to linger in the air. In a final, quiet twist of memory and motive, JD confesses that there were actually three emeralds all along—and he kept one for himself, a hidden reminder of the long road they’ve traveled and the price they’ve paid for a fortune that never fully belonged to them.
