In Los Angeles, Mickey Flannery, Christopher McDonald, a seasoned homicide detective, faces a devastating wake-up call when his wife Patty Flannery, Tabby Hanson, is killed right in front of their young son Jason. Seven years pass, and Mickey slips back into the police routine, returning to the homicide squad under Captain Garland, Harrison Page. He has been chasing a car-rings operation, a lead that the captain dismisses as not belonging to his division, leaving the broader mystery unresolved. Meanwhile, Mickey begins a tentative romance with Vera, Dey Young, and he hopes to reconnect with his son, who was raised by his grandparents and meets him with guarded curiosity.
During a routine lunch with his colleagues, Mickey is startled by gunfire as two cars speed by—an ambush tied to the shadowy world Gideon, Judd Nelson, runs, and his muscular companion Casey. They gun Trasher down in cold blood, an act that drags Jason into a dangerous spiral he barely understands. Jason crosses paths with Eve, Alyssa Milano, a tough metal enthusiast who soon becomes his girlfriend, even though she is in high school. After a tense introduction to Gideon and Casey, Jason goes home with Gloria, a club coworker, with whom he has a searing, secretive encounter. At home, Mickey confronts the fact of his estrangement, explaining that the years of mourning and alcoholism left him unable to provide, but he remains determined to protect his son.
His investigation takes a sharper turn when he is summoned to the death of Gloria. A clue surfaces—a letter signed by Jason in Gloria’s room—and Mickey realizes his son may be involved. He rushes to San Pedro High School to demand answers from Jason, only to be confronted by Gideon, who warns him to drop the matter. Gideon then secures Jason a job as a sound engineer at his club, a move that sets Jason on a professional path he barely anticipated. Mickey, however, recognizes Gideon’s car as the same one that departed after the Trasher killing, a link that begins to pull all the threads together.
Mickey’s pursuit of Gideon leads to a confrontation at Gideon’s home. He cuffs Gideon and accuses him of the murders, a scene interrupted when Captain Garland arrives and accuses Mickey of breaking procedural rules by visiting Gideon without authorization. The captain reveals Gideon has an alibi for Gloria’s death and, in a calculated move, Gideon offers alibis for everyone who works at the club, while sending Shannon to flirt with Jason to keep him distracted. Gideon notices Eve’s discomfort with the subterfuge; Jason’s grip on reality loosens after a brutal night, and Jason blacks out during an encounter with Shannon, who is later found dead. When Mickey arrives at the scene, Gideon points to Shannon’s body and implies Jason’s guilt, and the captain grows convinced enough to suspend Mickey from duty.
Driven by a mix of fear and love, Jason recalls that Gideon was the shooter who killed Shannon and decides to prove his innocence. He convinces Eve to flee with him, but Gideon’s men block their escape. With support from his old ally Ray Dureen, Lee de Broux, and Detective Oakes, [Clifton Powell](/actor/clifton-powell, Mickey steps beyond the beaten path to build a case against Gideon. Suspecting that Detective Falcone, Jay Acovone, has been harassing Mickey while probing Gideon’s operations, Mickey tailors a plan to follow Falcone to Gideon’s dockside hideout. The sting turns deadly when Gideon guns Falcone down, and Jason arrives just in time to help rescue them.
Gideon’s downfall culminates in an explosive confrontation that ends his crime ring and reveals Ray’s deeper involvement in the car deal network. Ray also confesses Patty’s murder, a consequence of her discovery of his criminal activities. Torn between vengeance and justice, Mickey considers taking matters into his own hands, but Jason’s influence steers him toward turning Ray in to the police, seeking a harsher but lawful reckoning instead of personal revenge. In the end, the truth emerges from a tangle of loyalties, violence, and family ties, leaving Mickey to reckon with the cost of his past while choosing a path that protects his son and honors Patty’s memory.
