An incoming train on the Los Angeles Blue Line arrives at the Firestone light rail station, where the professional thief Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro) disembarks, cleverly disguised as a paramedic. He makes his way to a nearby hospital, seamlessly blending in with the bustle of the emergency room while holding a clipboard, and eventually escapes in a stolen Goodhew ambulance.
At a construction supplier, Chris Shiherlis (Val Kilmer), one of Neil's accomplices, buys explosive charges, presenting a valid driver's license and paying in cash. Meanwhile, Lieutenant Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino), a robbery-homicide detective for the Los Angeles Police Department, returns home after a night with his wife Justine (played by Diane Verona). He prepares for work just as his 15-year-old stepdaughter Lauren (Natalie Portman) has a nervous breakdown, adding to the complexity of his life.
That day, Neil, along with his crew—Chris, Trejo (Danny Trejo), Waingro (Kevin Gage), and Michael Cheritto (Tom Sizemore)—conducts a meticulously planned heist on a Gage armored car. Disguised as paramedics, Neil and Chris position their stolen ambulance on Venice Boulevard, while Waingro gets picked up in a stolen tow truck.
