An incoming train on the Los Angeles Blue Line arrives at the Firestone light rail station, where the professional thief Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro) disembarks, cleverly disguised as a paramedic. He makes his way to a nearby hospital, seamlessly blending in with the bustle of the emergency room while holding a clipboard, and eventually escapes in a stolen Goodhew ambulance.

At a construction supplier, Chris Shiherlis (Val Kilmer), one of Neil’s accomplices, buys explosive charges, presenting a valid driver’s license and paying in cash. Meanwhile, Lieutenant Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino), a robbery-homicide detective for the Los Angeles Police Department, returns home after a night with his wife Justine (played by Diane Verona). He prepares for work just as his 15-year-old stepdaughter Lauren (Natalie Portman) has a nervous breakdown, adding to the complexity of his life.

That day, Neil, along with his crew—Chris, Trejo (Danny Trejo), Waingro (Kevin Gage), and Michael Cheritto (Tom Sizemore)—conducts a meticulously planned heist on a Gage armored car. Disguised as paramedics, Neil and Chris position their stolen ambulance on Venice Boulevard, while Waingro gets picked up in a stolen tow truck. As the armored car approaches, the gang dons hockey masks to conceal their identities. Neil uses the ambulance’s sirens to block the armored car, while Cheritto rams the truck into it, flipping it over and throwing the guards into chaos.

With precision and urgency, Neil and his crew emerge with assault rifles, quickly launching into the robbery. With every second counting, they rush to exploit the situation, but Waingro grows violent and kills one of the guards, complicating their already dangerous escape. As more police respond to the scene, Neil and the others narrowly evade arrest, leaving a trail of violence in their wake.

Later, Neil meets with Nate (Jon Voight), a money-laundering expert, who informs him that their stolen envelope contains hundreds of millions in bearer bonds. Nate also shares details of another job that promises a staggering $10 million. As Hanna begins piecing together the robbery, he investigates and finds clues about the criminals involved, including the alias “Slick” dropped by Cheritto.

At a diner, tensions rise as Neil confronts Waingro about his reckless actions. Meanwhile, Chris faces mounting issues at home with his wife Charlene (Ashley Judd), who is unaware of his criminal undertakings. The narrative unfolds with Neil and his crew planning further heists, including a major job targeting Far East National Bank, knowing they’ll face immediate repercussions the moment they make their move.

Vincent tracks Neil, all while dealing with personal demons and the fallout from his estranged wife leaving him. As the pressure mounts from both sides—detectives on one, criminals on the other—Neil’s commitment to his “30 seconds” rule reinforces his resolve to stay ahead of the law. The plot thickens with betrayal and double-crossing, leading to a high-stakes confrontation at the bank.

Amidst the chaos, a bloody shootout erupts as Neil and his crew attempt their boldest heist yet. The ensuing violence lays bare the thin line between law and lawlessness, forcing both men to confront their fates. As bullets fly, Neil’s world speeds towards a tragic conclusion, one where allegiance and ambition clash in a dangerous dance of survival.
