Dayashankar [Amrish Puri] is a wealthy NRI living in London with his wife Parvati [Reema Lagoo] and daughter Pooja [Madhuri Dixit], who is the apple of his eye. He also treats his deceased best friend's son Amar [Saif Ali Khan] as a surrogate son and has always hoped that Amar would marry Pooja. Studying in Edinburgh, Amar is delighted when he is invited to stay with the family in London. He eagerly prepares for his meeting with Pooja, planning to ask Dayashankar for her hand in marriage as soon as possible.

But Pooja has other plans — she has fallen in love with Vijay Khanna [Akshay Kumar], a pilot, and she intends to marry him. This disappoints Dayashankar, who has tacitly promised Amar that he would be the one to wed Pooja. After some gentle coaxing from Parvati and Amar, who decide to give up on marrying Pooja, Dayashankar agrees to respect his daughter's wishes. Though heartbroken, Amar puts on a brave face during Vijay and Pooja's engagement and marriage.

Tragedy strikes when Vijay is declared dead in an aviation accident. Pooja becomes a widow and discovers she is pregnant. Her father urges abortion, warning that society would harshly judge them and might call the child a "bastard." Amar steps forward, offering to marry Pooja and raise the child as his own. Pooja slowly realizes Amar's long-standing love and begins to reciprocate.

In a twist of fate, years later the police reveal that Vijay is alive, and after his recovery he returns to the UK to reclaim Pooja. She is overjoyed, but Vijay misreads the situation, believing that Amar engineered the accident to win Pooja. He joins forces with Kailashnath [Paresh Rawal], an old enemy of Amar's father, and they hatch a plan for revenge, even as Vijay suspects nothing of the truth. The plan includes destroying Amar's factories and kidnapping Pooja's son, Rahul, not realizing the boy is his own child. Pooja tries to explain that she married Amar to give her child a father, but Vijay remains wary and angry.

Dayashankar finally reveals that he orchestrated the supposed murder of Vijay to protect the family. With the danger still looming, Amar, Pooja, Vijay, and Dayashankar work together to safeguard Rahul. As they confront Kailashnath and his gang, Kailashnath shoots Amar multiple times, but Amar uses his body as a shield to protect the child. Dayashankar then shoots Kailashnath to death. Amar dies surrounded by a grieving Pooja, a remorseful Vijay, their rescued son Rahul, and a saddened Dayashankar. In a final moment of reconciliation, Pooja and Vijay honor Amar’s memory and choose to face the future together.

Explore frequently asked questions about Aarzoo (1999) with spoiler-rich answers covering the full plot summary, major story beats, character motivations, hidden details, and ending meaning. This movie summary FAQ helps explain confusing scenes, plot twists, and narrative decisions in clear, searchable detail.

Q1

Why did Dayashankar arrange Vijay's fake death?

A.

Dayashankar orchestrated Vijay's supposed death to protect the family's reputation. As a traditional NRI family, he feared that Pooja's pregnancy as a widow would bring social shame and that society would label the child a "bastard." By faking Vijay's death, he believed he was protecting Pooja and the unborn child from judgment, though his actions ultimately caused more turmoil.

Earlier, Dayashankar strongly urged Pooja to abort the pregnancy, showing his desperation to avoid scandal.

Q2

Why did Amar agree to marry pregnant Pooja?

A.

Amar had loved Pooja since childhood and always hoped to marry her. When Vijay was presumed dead and Pooja faced social stigma as a pregnant widow, Amar stepped forward voluntarily to give the child a father and protect Pooja from societal judgment. His love for her was selfless enough to accept raising another man's child as his own.

Amar had been preparing to ask Dayashankar for Pooja's hand in marriage before she revealed her relationship with Vijay.

Q3

Why did Vijay team up with Kailashnath for revenge?

A.

Vijay mistakenly believed that Amar had engineered the aviation accident to win Pooja for himself. Fueled by anger and misplaced pride, Vijay joined forces with Kailashnath, an old enemy of Amar's father, to seek revenge against Amar without knowing the truth about what actually happened.

Vijay's misreading of the situation stems from his pride and inability to accept that Pooja had moved on.

Q4

What was Kailashnath's connection to Amar's family?

A.

Kailashnath was an old enemy of Amar's father. This ancient grudge motivated him to collaborate with Vijay in destroying Amar's life and business. He used the opportunity to exact revenge by targeting Amar's factories and eventually kidnapping Pooja's son.

The timeline establishes Kailashnath's personal vendetta against Amar's family long before the main events.

Q5

Why didn't Vijay believe Pooja's explanation about her marriage?

A.

Vijay was too consumed by anger and wounded pride to accept Pooja's explanation. He suspected that Amar had deliberately caused the accident and stolen Pooja while he was away. This suspicion, combined with his anger at finding her happily married to another man, made him refuse to listen to reason.

Vijay's quick decision to seek revenge rather than hear Pooja out shows his character flaw of rash judgment.

Q6

How did Amar die protecting Rahul?

A.

During the final confrontation with Kailashnath's gang, Kailashnath shot Amar multiple times. Amar used his own body as a shield to protect young Rahul from the bullets, sacrificing himself to save the child he had raised as his own son. Dayashankar then killed Kailashnath to stop the attack.

Amar's willingness to step forward and marry Pooja had already demonstrated his readiness to protect her and the child at personal cost.

Q7

Who was Rahul's real biological father?

A.

Rahul was the biological son of Vijay and Pooja, conceived during their brief marriage before Vijay's presumed death. Neither Vijay nor Kailashnath realized this when they plotted against Amar and kidnapped the child. Amar had raised Rahul as his own son since birth.

Pooja's pregnancy was revealed shortly after Vijay's death, establishing his paternity before any confusion arose.

Q8

Why did Pooja and Vijay reconcile after Amar's death?

A.

Amar's ultimate sacrifice, dying to protect Vijay's son, convinced both Pooja and Vijay of his pure intentions. His selfless act erased the misunderstanding and brought them together in grief. They chose to honor Amar's memory by staying together and raising Rahul as a family, finding closure through forgiveness.

Throughout the film, Amar consistently demonstrated unconditional love for Pooja and the child, foreshadowing his ultimate sacrifice.

Q9

Why did Dayashankar reveal his role in Vijay's fake death?

A.

Dayashankar confessed to orchestrating Vijay's fake death to clear the air and explain the truth to the family. With the danger from Kailashnath still present and the misunderstandings between characters at their peak, he felt it was time to reveal his role in the conspiracy and allow everyone to face the truth while uniting against the external threat.

Dayashankar's initial pressure on Pooja to abort the pregnancy hinted at his desperation to control the family's reputation.

Q10

How did Vijay survive the aviation accident?

A.

Vijay was seriously injured in the aviation accident but survived. The police later revealed that he was alive and had recovered from his injuries. He then returned to the UK to reclaim his life and Pooja, not knowing that Dayashankar had arranged the entire incident as a fake death.

The original report of Vijay's death came from Dayashankar's orchestration, not from actual medical confirmation.
