In 1650, the quiet town of Kilkenny, Ireland, faced oppressive demands from the Lord Protector, Oliver Cromwell. The villagers struggled to comply with his orders, particularly the directive to clear nearby woods, setting the stage for conflict with a pack of wolves that inhabited the forest.

Summoned from England, Bill Goodfellowe and his adventurous daughter Robyn arrive in Kilkenny to tackle the wolf problem. Their mission is imperative to allow woodcutters to proceed unhindered, but tensions with the villagers mount quickly.

Feeling confined in Kilkenny, Robyn sneaks out with her loyal pet falcon, Merlin, seeking adventure. This escapade quickly becomes perilous when she accidentally injures Merlin while defending a shepherd from a wolf.

After wounding Merlin, Robyn witnesses a mysterious girl, Mebh Óg MacTíre, retrieve her falcon and disappear into the woods. This encounter unveils the complexities surrounding the wolves and the magical beings linked to them.

Upon returning home, Robyn faces the fury of the Lord Protector, who chastises her for disobedience. He grants Bill only two days to exterminate the wolves, escalating the urgency of their mission.

Determined to understand the truth, Robyn cleverly escapes the guards and returns to the woods. There, she is amazed to find that Merlin has healed, leading her further into the natural world she feels drawn to.

Robyn meets Mebh once more, who reveals her identity as a wolfwalker with healing powers. After a transformational experience, Robyn herself becomes a wolfwalker, gaining new abilities and a bond with Mebh.

As Robyn strives to retain her human form, she uncovers the presence of Moll MacTíre, another wolfwalker. Moll informs Robyn about the urgent need for her and the pack to find safety as dangers loom.

The Lord Protector's forces descend upon Kilkenny, increasing tensions between the villagers and Cromwell's men. As chaos erupts, Robyn and Mebh are caught in the crossfire, unsure of how to save their kin.
