The film opens with a brief recap of the Owens family history. Ancestor Maria Owens cast a spell for the women in her family to never fall in love, but it left them with a curse for any man that falls for an Owens woman to die. Sally (Sandra Bullock) lost her second husband Gary, so she cast a spell to erase her daughters’ memories of magic to prevent them from experiencing the same heartbreak. Sally’s sister Gillian (Nicole Kidman) agrees to keep the secret. The people in Massachusetts also come to the house to see the family of witches.

Over a decade later, both of Sally’s daughters are in college. Antonia (Maisie Williams) is on track to be a neurosurgeon, while Kylie (Joey King) is into the arts and is dating Gideon (Xolo Maridueña).

Aunt Jet (Dianne Wiest) follows a raven to a book that is kept at the library where Sally works. It is the Book of the Raven, a spellbook for left-handed magic and burns when the witches try to grab it. It contains a spell that can undo Maria’s curse, but the important pages that say how are stuck together. Jet takes it with her back to the house.

Sally and Gillian prepare for Jet’s birthday party, along with Aunt Franny (Stockard Channing). The ladies hear a clicking noise, which is coming from a Death Watch Beetle, which signifies someone’s incoming death. Jet and Franny admit that the noise has been going on for a week, which means Jet knew she was going to die that night but wanted to have one last celebration with her family. The ladies also choose not to tell Kylie and Antonia about Jet. Later at night, Jet gathers with her sister and nieces one last time, and her bodies dissolves into a magic essence.

The family holds a funeral service for Jet. Gideon shows up to support Kylie as a surprise, so she introduces him to the family. Sally is quietly upset because she knows what this means for Kylie. Kylie and Gideon later sleep together (non-sexually), where they tell each other “I love you”.

The next day, Gideon goes to pick up flowers for Kylie, only to get hit by a car and fall into a coma. A distraught Kylie goes to Sally and Gillian, who tell her the truth about their family’s history as witches, along with their curse. Kylie is angered at her mother for keeping the truth from her. She finds the Book of the Raven and sees visions that lead her to travel to London.

Sally and Gillian realize where Kylie is headed. They learn from Franny that there is a professor in London named Ian Wright (Lee Pace) who can help them. Antonia and Franny stay at the hospital with Gideon, where Franny tries to protect him with magic.

The sisters arrive at Ian’s home in London. They see that he has been cursed and is paralyzed (and also naked). Gillian casts a spell that removes the dark magic from Ian’s body, freeing him. After the sisters explain their reasons for searching for him, Ian realizes who they are, as he is familiar with the Owens family curse. He tells the sisters to return the next morning to help Sally track down Kylie.

Kylie is unable to pry the book pages open, so she attempts to create a concoction that might help her, but it doesn’t work. The book eventually forms a message of direction: “Lockland Manor”. Kylie travels to Thornfield, where she is introduced to a young man named Tom Bailey (Solly McLeod), who takes Kylie to the manor.

Sally and Gillian find Ian again. He helps Sally tap back into her mind to access her visions to link her to Kylie. This lets her know to go to Thornfield. Ian also mentions having lost a scroll called a Raudskinna.

At Lockland Manor, Kylie explains her reason for being there. Tom says he knows of Maria Owens, and that they are near the sight where Maria’s mother Hannah was burned to death. Hannah had an illegitimate bloodline with Lord Lockland that did not inherit magic abilities. Tom then offers Kylie some tea but appears to slip something in there. When she wakes up, he has organized a set-up in the manor to try and siphon Kylie’s magic, as Tom is a descendant of Hannah’s second child and has gone his whole life desiring magic as well. When Kylie tries to run, Tom knocks her unconscious.

Sally and Gillian meet Ian’s mother before going to Tom’s house after hearing Kylie was asking around about Lockland Manor. The sisters go there and find evidence that Tom previously worked with Ian. Believing them to be in cahoots with something sinister, Sally knocks Ian unconscious and rushes with Gillian to the manor.

The sisters come upon Tom setting up for his ritual, using the Raudskinna he stole from Ian. He uses a needle to pierce Kylie’s chest and take her magic. Sally and Gillian try to intervene, but Tom’s magic is strong and he uses it to knock them down. Gillian cuts her hand open along with Kylie and Sally, using their blood magic against Tom. After reciting an incantation, they successfully cause Tom’s body to disintegrate.

The Book of the Raven’s pages open to reveal the answer to removing the curse. It involves a witch sacrificing her life to end the curse. Back at the hospital, the Death Watch Beetle comes back, and Franny knows what she has to do. Sally and Ian share a moment together, as they had grown close to one another, but Sally doesn’t want to risk even a kiss so that nothing happens to Ian.

Sally, Gillian, and Kylie return to Massachusetts. Franny goes by a lake to perform her sacrifice, which allows Gideon to wake up. Sally and Gillian feel Franny’s spirit.

One year later, Kylie and Gideon get married. The people in town gather for the reception, and Ian returns to begin a relationship with Sally. Sally, Gillian, Kylie, and Antonia then show off their magic by floating down from the roof with umbrellas.
