On a monsoon night, a terrified young woman, Sonia, Yogeeta Bali steps off a taxi and hurries toward the Deenapur railway station, hoping to catch a train to Bombay. She clutches an attache case filled with jewelry worth lakhs, and when the station master delays, she improvises a wait until morning. With nowhere to go, she entrusts the precious case to Rohit Kumar Saxena, Rajesh Khanna, who promises to keep it safe in his locked cabinet. Rohit’s instinct tells him she is fleeing from danger, and although she denies any theft, he believes her innocence and urges her to rest in his quarters nearby for protection.

Rashmi’s instinct tells her that Moti Babu is not entirely honest, and she warns Rohit that trouble may follow if he stays in his orbit. Rohit begins to examine the company’s records and uncovers discrepancies that suggest a large sum of money has vanished. Moti Babu, realizing that the truth could unravel his empire, plots to remove Rohit from the picture. He enlists the help of Bijli, Leena Das, and Bahadur in a scheme designed to ruin Rohit’s reputation.

To secure his victory, Moti Babu stages a shocking accusation: Rohit is alleged to have tried to assault Bijli and to have cheated Rashmi. The Panchayat condemns Rohit, who is publicly beaten and ordered to leave the village. Meanwhile, Rashmi, torn by her loyalties, witnesses Rohit’s downfall and decides to flee with him to Bombay, where they marry in a quiet temple ceremony. Their love survives the sting of betrayal, but the shadows of their past linger as the couple begins a new life together in the city.

Two inspectors, Inspector Tiwari and Inspector Sinha, arrive at Rohit’s office in the present time, probing the case of a missing Sonia and her claimed theft. Rohit, already unsettled by Sonia’s appearance and the echo of Rashmi’s past, chooses not to reveal Sonia’s whereabouts. He returns to his quarters to face Sonia, who insists on her innocence and presents her mother’s letter as proof. Reading it, Rohit gains clarity and decides to trust Sonia’s version, stepping back from suspicion.

Rain lashes the window as Rohit’s mind drifts again to Rashmi and their early days together. The memory revisits the couple’s wedding-in-waiting moment, with Rashmi’s evolving artistic side taking center stage. She struggles to learn domestic duties, battles with the idea of motherhood, and finds solace and validation in painting, guided by Chetan Kumar, Govardhan Asrani, who lives on the floor below. Chetan also helps Rashmi polish her talents as a model, a world Rohit isn’t thrilled to see her enter because of the ruthless nature of the industry.

Rohit works at Bombay Publicity, where Rashmi’s artistic fire grows brighter as she nonchalantly blossoms into a top model, eventually winning a beauty pageant. The glamour, however, weighs on her, and she longs for more than the intimate confines of their domestic life. Rohit, despite his initial reservations, supports her ambition, pouring his heart into keeping their fragile relationship intact. Yet the pressure mounts when Rashmi becomes pregnant. She contemplates an abortion to preserve her career, but Rohit cherishes the unborn child and urges her to keep it. The couple’s harmony is shattered when Rashmi suffers a miscarriage after a fall at Chetan’s flat, an accident Rohit initially interprets as her voluntary action. A bitter quarrel follows, Rohit leaves, and Rashmi eventually departs again.

Rohit resigns from Bombay Publicity and spirals into a difficult search for Rashmi. He finds no one at Diwan’s house, and a legal notice arrives—Rashmi and Rohit are now formally separated. With no money of his own, Rohit takes a leave of absence from the city’s bustle and accepts a job as a Station Master in a remote hill station, Deenapur, hoping the change of scenery will help him locate Rashmi or at least measure his own heart’s pace once more. Meanwhile, Rashmi’s family clashes with Rohit’s sense of self-worth, and money becomes the immediate obstacle to mending their broken bond.

In the present, Rohit’s world tightens around him as he faces the impending possibility of losing Rashmi forever. He discovers that the only valuable asset he can marshal is the jewelry stored in his office locker—the very same set Sonia arrived with. The plan to rescue Rashmi by paying debts or buying back their life turns dark when Rohit contemplates stealing the attache to fund a hopeful reconciliation. A cruel twist arrives when Rohit is arrested for a murder he did not commit. The case hinges on the missing jewelled case and a body that doesn’t belong to him.
