As Joe and three fellow rescuers scramble to secure the fallen balloon, a sudden gust of wind propels them into the sky. In the midst of the chaos, one of their team members is swept away, plummeting to a tragic fate while they watch in horror. The trauma from that harrowing day resurfaces during a dinner with friends, including Robin, Rachel, and Claire, where Joe’s tormented mind bears the scars of that disastrous incident.

Miraculously, the balloon lands safely, and its young occupant is unharmed. However, for Joe, the memory of the man who fell becomes a haunting presence, lurking in the corners of his mind. Later, he teams up with fellow rescuer Jed Parry (played by Rhys Ifans) to retrieve the body of the deceased, feeling an inexplicable pull towards Jed’s compassionate nature.

As the weeks drag on, Joe becomes increasingly trapped in a web of guilt and self-blame, replaying hypothetical situations in a frantic effort to absolve himself. It is during this agonizing time that Jed reaches out, calling Joe with an urgent invitation to discuss their shared ordeal. The following morning, Joe learns that Claire has been trying to contact him while Jed is at her home. He rushes back only to stumble upon a shocking scene: Jed and Claire are together on the sofa, Jed displaying visible signs of aggression and wrongfully accusing Joe of the attack.

Joe’s anger reaches a boiling point as he watches in horror as Jed suddenly plunges a kitchen knife into Claire, leaving her bleeding on the floor. In a moment of deception, Joe pretends to accept Jed and they share a grotesque kiss before Joe seizes the knife from Jed and retaliates violently.

Once the dust settles, Joe rushes to help Claire and calls for medical assistance before returning to the scene of the initial balloon incident, where he encounters the grieving widow and daughter of the man who perished. A chance meeting with a friendly couple reveals that the picnic basket and scarf belonged to them, a token from their own affair. This revelation adds a new layer of complexity to Joe’s quest for understanding.

In the wake of his actions, Joe revisits the site where it all began, alongside Claire, who now needs a cane as a symbol of her physical and emotional recovery. As they attempt to recreate their unrealized picnic, Joe searches for the right words to express his emotions, praying for her forgiveness and the chance to mend their fractured relationship.

As the story reaches its conclusion, an unsettling yet captivating twist emerges, drawing viewers from the whimsical dreamscape back into a stark psychiatric hospital. Here, Jed (played by Rhys Ifans) appears very much alive, fixated on a blank page as he scribbles away with a pen.
