Women in Love (1969) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Women in Love (1969), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

Two sisters, Ursula Brangwen and Gudrun Brangwen, travel through the Midlands mining town of Beldover in 1920, on their way to the wedding of Laura Crich, daughter of the town’s wealthy mine owner, Thomas Crich, to Tibby Lupton, a naval officer. The trip sets the stage for a social world where class, desire, and artistic temperament collide, and the town itself becomes a canvas for the relationships that will test each character.

At the village church, the sisters are drawn to different members of the wedding party: Gudrun is captivated by Laura’s brother, Gerald Crich, while Ursula is pulled toward Gerald’s best friend, Rupert Birkin. Ursula, a school teacher, recalls Rupert’s visit to her classroom, interrupting a botany lesson to discourse on the sexual nature of the catkin, hinting at the intimate tensions that will braid their lives together.

The gathering moves to Hermione Roddice, a wealthy woman whose fragile relationship with Rupert is fraying. She plans a social entertainment—a dance “in the style of the Russian ballet”—but Rupert coolly pushes for ragtime, sparking a volatile clash. Hermione storms out after Rupert’s insistence on a different mood, and she smashes a glass paperweight against his head; he staggers outside, strips, and wanders through the woods, a moment of vulnerability that contrasts with his earlier certainties.

At the Crichs’ annual picnic, Ursula and Gudrun find a secluded spot. Gudrun dances before Highland cattle while Ursula sings “I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles.” When Gerald Crich and Rupert arrive, Gerald dismisses Gudrun’s behavior as “impossible and ridiculous,” then confesses his love for her. > “That’s one way of putting it,” Gudrun retorts. The two women wander with Rupert, discussing death and love, and Ursula and Rupert ultimately make love in the woods. The day ends in tragedy as Laura Crich and Tibby Lupton drown while swimming in the lake.

In one of Gerald and Rupert’s conversations, Rupert suggests Japanese-style wrestling. They strip and wrestle by the firelight, and Rupert revels in their closeness, proposing they swear to love each other. Gerald cannot comprehend Rupert’s longing for an emotional union between men as well as a union with a woman. The two decide that Ursula and Rupert should marry, while Gudrun and Gerald continue their own tumultuous arrangement. One evening, exhausted by his father’s illness and death, Gerald slips into the Brangwen house to spend the night with Gudrun in her bed, and then leaves at dawn.

Later, after Ursula and Rupert’s marriage, Gerald proposes a trip to the Alps for Christmas. At their inn, Gudrun’s fascination with Loerke, the gay German sculptor, irritates Gerald. Gudrun, an artist herself, is drawn to Loerke’s belief that brutality is necessary to create art. Gerald grows increasingly jealous and angry, while Gudrun ridicules him. Unable to endure it any longer, he tries to strangle her and then trudges off into the cold to die by suicide.

Rupert and Ursula return to their cottage in England. Rupert mourns his dead friend, and in a final reflection on love, Ursula asserts that there cannot be two kinds of love. Rupert explains that she is enough for the love of a woman, but there remains another eternal bond between a man and a woman.
