In the climax of Walden, the seemingly unremarkable protagonist, Walden Dean, reveals himself as a vigilante killer. As the story unfolds, Walden becomes involved in investigating a serial killer targeting children. His accidental presence at crime scenes and his actions, driven by a mix of moral outrage and confused perception, draw the attention of police detectives Bill and Sally. Through clever deduction, Walden uncovers the horrifying truth—that Judge Boyle is the real killer behind the children’s murders, exploiting young victims for personal perverse pleasures. Walden’s insight, aided by a remark George made about the ‘bad man,’ leads him to find crucial evidence—torn rope in Boyle’s car—that implicates the judge.

Confronting Boyle, Walden forces him to confess and ultimately drives him to commit suicide. This act ends Boyle’s reign of terror, and Walden’s vigilante justice appears to be validated by public sentiment—many see him as a hero, even as the police acknowledge that he’s the one who took justice into his own hands. While Walden’s mental state remains fragile, he is aware that the brain tumor might eventually kill him, and this awareness fuels his relentless pursuit of those he deems truly evil.
