In the heart of New Orleans, Will Gerard, portrayed by Guy Pearce, lives a seemingly ordinary life as an English teacher at Rampart High School. His world shatters when his beloved wife, Laura, becomes a victim of a brutal assault by a man named Hodge. As Will anxiously awaits updates on her condition at the hospital, he finds solace in the presence of his best friend, Jimmy, played by Nicolas Cage, who reassures him that justice will eventually be served.

However, fate takes a dark turn when a mysterious figure named Simon steps in, presenting himself as a representative of a clandestine group seeking to avenge unpunished crimes. Simon reveals that Hodge, the assailant, had a troubling past, recently paroled after a series of violent offenses, including previous rapes. He makes a chilling proposition: if Will cooperates with him on a forthcoming task, Simon guarantees Hodge’s demise, sparing Laura the agony of a protracted trial. Stricken with grief and desperation, Will agrees to this morally ambiguous deal, resulting in Hodge’s untimely end. To solidify his organization’s involvement, Simon sends Will a chilling photograph of Hodge’s lifeless body, along with a necklace that belonged to Laura, reminding Will of the trauma they’ve endured together. The group’s ominous catchphrase echoes in Will’s mind: > “The hungry white rabbit jumps.”

Fast forward six months, and Simon resurfaces, tasking Will with a new assignment: surveilling a woman and her two children at the zoo. Will’s responsibility is to identify a particular individual and reach out to Simon if he’s seen. In a bid to placate Simon’s organization, which has become a dark shadow over his life, Will reluctantly accepts. But the tension escalates when Simon insists that the man he must target is a sex offender. Will is commanded to push him from a high pedestrian walkway, making it appear as a suicide.

Navigating a treacherous mix of violence and ethical dilemmas, Will finds himself grappling with his conscience. When the moment of truth arrives, he chooses to spare Alan Marsh’s life, opting to extract information about Simon instead. This decision proves to be pivotal as it leads to insights into Alan’s own complications. However, Alan’s paranoia causes him to mistakenly think Will is out to harm him, resulting in a chaotic struggle that ends with Alan’s fatal fall and unfortunate collision with an oncoming truck.

When the authorities, represented by Detectives Rudeski and Green, turn against him, Will finds himself arrested and accused of the crime. Durgan’s unconventional interrogation method—a game of sentence completion—reveals his suspicions about Will’s connection to Simon’s shadowy organization. He releases Will, but not without a stern warning: he has just 24 hours to flee the city before Simon’s lethal enforcers, Scar and Cancer, come for him.

As Will reevaluates his situation and the shocking revelation that Alan was not a sex offender but an award-winning investigative reporter emerges, he realizes the gravity of his entanglements. Alan’s investigation into Simon’s vigilante group had put him in jeopardy, subsequently leading to his demise. In a desperate bid for survival, Will attends Alan’s memorial and encounters Simon, now a looming threat.

Seeking refuge, Will stumbles upon a storage facility connected to Alan and discovers vital evidence regarding Simon’s organization. With Laura supporting him, they devise a plan to outsmart their adversaries. As Will uncovers Simon’s true identity as Eugene Cook, he gains insight into Jimmy’s troubled past—his brother had been a victim of murder, which propelled him into Simon’s circles.

In a last-ditch effort to turn the tables, Will reaches out to Cook with incriminating footage and, in exchange, seeks evidence of his own innocence. Their meeting is set against the backdrop of a monster truck show, but things take a darker twist when Will learns of Laura’s kidnapping. In a dilapidated mall left in Hurricane Katrina’s wake, Will confronts Cook, Jimmy, and Cancer, who holds Laura hostage. Tensions escalate as Will confronts Cook, branding him a hypocrite, prompting Jimmy to accidentally shoot Cancer in a fit of rage.

The ensuing chaos invites a violent confrontation where the lines between friend and foe are irrevocably blurred. In a heart-wrenching conflict, both physical and moral, Will and Laura fight for their lives, ultimately culminating in Laura’s heroic act of reprisal as she shoots Cook, sealing her fate and reclaiming her freedom.

As they emerge from this harrowing experience, the weight of their actions hangs over them. When Will confesses to the chaos wrought by the vigilantism that ensued, Lieutenant Durgan presents a philosophical twist, suggesting that both he and Cook were equally complicit in the violence. With his name finally cleared, Will decides to take up Alan’s mantle, pledging to honor his late friend by sharing the evidence he discovered about Simon’s organization with Gibbs, a reporter at the memorial. As Will passes along the crucial information, Gibbs’s cryptic response sends a chill through him, hinting at deeper connections to the very organization he has sought to dismantle, leaving Will to grapple with unresolved danger and lingering doubts.
