Raja is an unemployed, carefree, and lazy young man who lives in Thenkasi within a crowded extended family that includes his grandfather Paramasivam, his grandmother, his parents, an uncle, an aunt, and paternal cousins. His younger brother, Ramesh, is a year his junior and has carved out a successful career as a software engineer in Delhi. Paramasivam is a wealthy, respected retired IAS officer who favors Ramesh for his education and obedience, often speaking down to Raja and even leaving him out of daily prayers. The family dynamics set the stage for Raja’s efforts to prove himself, despite a constant sense of being looked down upon.
Into this home come Paramasivam’s niece, her husband, and their daughter Latha(/actor/anita-hassanandani-reddy), who move from Kolkata to stay for a short while. Latha quickly becomes the object of Raja’s curiosity, and he sets out to understand her world and win her friendship. He discovers that Ramesh is also drawn to Latha, and this sparks a quiet race between the brothers to earn her affection. To gain respect, Raja tries to reform himself, first aiming to become a collector, then attempting to master English, only to be repeatedly blocked by his lack of formal education.
As Ramesh works to derail him, Raja endures setbacks that threaten the fragile bridge he is building with Latha. A scheme involving a favored fruit—sapota—backfires: Raja believes Latha loves the treat, delivered as a gesture of care, but in reality she hates the fruit and is allergic to it. Latha’s allergy creates a painful misstep in their budding friendship, and Raja grows disheartened by the rift, the disapproval from Paramasivam, and his own repeated failures in life.
One turning moment comes when Latha reassures him that wealth or education should not define love; what matters is earnest effort and true care. She makes it clear that a simple, sincerely earned gift can mean more than expensive tokens. Inspired, Raja forges ahead, committed to hard work rather than appearances.
Raja manages to land a job at a metal factory, where he works long hours on dangerous tasks. Paramasivam witnesses his grandson’s transformation, overhears the pride of the workers, and begins to soften his stance, recognizing the change in Raja as real and earned rather than borrowed from status.
At Latha’s 23rd birthday party, Latha shines as a central figure once again, and Ramesh presents her with a costly laptop computer. Ashamed, Raja tries to hide his gift (some cheap clothing wrapped in plain paper), but Latha insists on trying on the outfit immediately. Paramasivam realises that Raja’s growth was sparked by Latha’s influence and quietly proposes marriage between Raja and Latha. Raja declines, choosing not to be defined by wealth or status. Paramasivam reacts with anger, threatening to cut Raja out of the inheritance, and the tension forces Raja to leave home to keep working at the factory.
Facing the rejection, Raja chooses to leave home and continues his labor at the factory, determined to prove his worth. In a poignant moment, Ramesh confronts Raja, confessing that Latha is actually in love with him. Raja explains that love must be mutual and not forced, and Ramesh, moved by his brother’s humility, seeks forgiveness. The siblings reconcile, and Paramasivam, overhearing their exchange, feels a pang of guilt. In an emotional turn, he welcomes Raja back into the family, expressing pride and affection, signaling a new, more hopeful dynamic within the household.
