My Sassy Girl

Gyun-Woo has been unable to shake off the memory of The Girl from The Girl of My Sassy Girl (2001) after she chose a Buddhist life over their romance. He then reunites with his childhood sweetheart, a girl from China who endured teasing for her Korean, and they marry despite initial opposition from Gyun-Woo’s mother Jang Young-nam. Unbeknownst to Gyun-Woo, his wife secretly sends in a job application to a telecommunications company in China. He and a fellow Korean, Yong-sub, are recruited by the company and assigned to Team Oxford, a unit that turns out to be reserved for recruits selected by the Chairman’s bulldog named Oxford. Sometime later, Team Oxford is disbanded, his Korean colleague is fired, and Gyun-Woo is forced to perform degrading tasks for the company’s Executive Director Kim. To keep his wife happy, he does not reveal his true employment status. But when she learns of it, she confronts the Executive Director at his home during a party, and the situation spirals as she knocks him into the swimming pool. As a result, Gyun-Woo must leave the company, and his relationship with his wife grows strained, pushing them toward separation. Just before he departs with his things, a female colleague named Yuko reminds him of how his wife stood up for him in front of the Executive Director. After returning home to find his wife gone and thinking back to their joyful moments together, he vows to find her. His arduous journey through mountain trails in China ends in a reunion on the plains, where his wife is with her grandfather and other villagers herding livestock on horseback. The two reconcile and go on to have children, building a family together. The story closes with a phone call from The Girl, signaling that she is returning to normal life and to Gyun-Woo’s world.
