Maya Vargas (Jennifer Lopez) is a woman living in Queens, New York, who is approaching her fortieth birthday. She has spent the past fifteen years working diligently as an assistant manager at a local value grocery store, where she has successfully introduced innovative ideas like the “Monday Momz” program. Despite her dedication and hard work, Maya’s life feels unfulfilled, and she often dreams of having a more glamorous and exciting existence.

Her friends and boyfriend, Milo Ventimiglia as Trey, believe she is about to land a managerial role at her store, which she has long aspired to. However, to her disappointment, she arrives on her birthday to discover that an outside candidate, Arthur (Dan Bucatinsky), has been hired for the position because Maya never attended college, which makes her ineligible for the role despite her talent and dedication. This event leaves her feeling overlooked and frustrated about her life’s trajectory.

During her birthday celebration, Maya confesses to her best friend Joan (Leah Remini) and her godson Dilly (Dalton Harrod) that she wishes she had gone to a prestigious school and lived a more adventurous life. She longs for the type of experiences she believes she missed out on. Later, at her workplace, Maya’s coworker and boss, Arthur, continues to be a source of irritation, pushing her to her limits.

Joan surprises Maya with an unexpected gift: an interview setup with a prominent company, Franklin and Clarke, created by her step-son Dilly, a brilliant young computer programmer headed to Stanford. Annoyed at the manipulation but inspired by her friend’s faith in her, Maya decides to attend the interview. To her astonishment, she is called upstairs and meets Anderson Clarke (Treat Williams), the company’s CEO, who is genuinely impressed by her impressive background, including her education at Harvard and Wharton, her philanthropic work, and her experience in the Peace Corps.

Though initially hesitant, Maya accepts the consulting role offered to her, and soon she is immersed in the corporate world she never expected to enter. She also begins a challenging relationship with Zoe (Vanessa Hudgens), Anderson’s sharp and somewhat cold daughter, whom he introduces to Maya during her first days on the job. Zoe’s attitude is initially dismissive, and Maya’s honest critique of the company’s failing beauty product line causes some tension. Zoe advocates for improving the current lines with organic ingredients, but Maya pushes for an entirely natural approach, leading to a heated debate about the company’s future.

Maya’s new corporate life brings her unexpected changes, including a lavish wardrobe, a spacious apartment, and a demanding schedule. Despite her success, her relationship with Trey becomes strained, especially after she reveals she had not informed him of her new job and the lies surrounding her background. Molly, her friend Joan, reminds her of the importance of honesty and encourages her to confront her past. Trey, feeling betrayed, ultimately ends their relationship, citing their differing desires and Maya’s reluctance to open up about her true self and her past.

As Maya navigates her new career, she faces numerous challenges—such as leading a rowing event at the company, which results in a minor disaster, speaking Mandarin with the help of a translator, and managing the internal politics that threaten her confidence. During one of these moments, Maya discovers a startling truth: Zoe is actually her biological daughter, a revelation that sparks immense joy and a renewed sense of connection. Zoe was adopted after Maya was placed in foster care many years earlier, and learning this news brings them closer as they share heartfelt moments, with Maya encouraging Zoe to pursue her passion for art and return to art school.

Meanwhile, Anderson appreciates Maya’s innovative ideas, especially her concept of creating an all-natural, multi-purpose product. Her team works tirelessly to perfect it, facing setbacks and skepticism. At the company’s Christmas party, a romantic subplot unfolds when Zoe’s assistant Ariana and product scientist Chase share their first kiss. In the midst of these developments, Maya’s confidence is challenged when Ron (Freddie Stroma) doubts her capabilities and accuses her of faking her resume. He eventually confirms his suspicions, leading Maya to make a bold decision.

During her pivotal presentation at a major televised event, Maya chooses to reveal the truth about her background and her fabricated resume. Her honesty surprises everyone—including Anderson and Zoe—and she admits that her lies were driven by a desire for a chance at a better life. Her decision to come clean results in her quitting the company, feeling she has lost her opportunity but gained her integrity. Zoe, hurt and disillusioned, considers returning to London for art school, but Maya’s sincere effort to rebuild their relationship offers a glimmer of hope.

A year later, Maya successfully transforms Monday Momz into a thriving business and app, with her friends and Dilly’s help. She maintains a warm friendship with Anderson, and Trey visits her, asking for a future built on honesty. They rekindle their relationship, with Trey expressing his wish to start a family together, to which Maya responds that he is her family. Meanwhile, Zoe finishes her studies in London and returns to New York, where Maya welcomes her with open arms. The story concludes with Maya and Zoe running together, symbolizing new beginnings, trust, and the importance of authentic connections and self-acceptance.
