A car enters the village and an MP steps out to inspect. He notices the village’s remarkable cleanliness and self-discipline, and learns that a young man named Udayamoorthy is believed to be behind it. He senses there is a deeper story and hints at a larger cause behind the transformation.

As a privileged adolescent, Udayamoorthy ignores a blind beggar woman who struggles to pick up a banana thrown by a passerby. An old man helps her and scolds the boy, urging him to be more compassionate. The old man’s words plant a seed of guilt that will later provoke a change in him.

Now an adult, Udayamoorthy is mischievous and carefree, pulling pranks on his family. Pillai, his father, is a fiery Carnatic musician who administers strict discipline, while Udayamoorthy’s elder brother is mute and trained to play the nadhaswaram. Tension grows between tradition and his free spirit.

Pillai shouts that it would be better to die than to live irresponsibly. The next morning, Udayamoorthy pretends to hang himself in the hall, causing a shock before it is revealed as a prank. Angayarkanni, hurt by the mischief, laments that she failed to guide him properly.

Inspired by the temple incident in his youth and by a gardener who wants to contribute to society, Udayamoorthy decides to live responsibly. He resolves to be useful to others, including encouraging tree-planting and community service. This marks the start of his reformist path.

In a government office, a woman protests against an official for rejecting her application for a teaching job because of caste and religion. The resolve she shows awakens Udayamoorthy to social justice as part of his mission. This encounter foreshadows his future attraction to Lalithakamalam’s secular outlook.

Later, Udayamoorthy sees the same woman at a theatre where she slaps a thug for misbehaving. He learns her name is Lalithakamalam and that she shares secular, progressive views. He falls in love with her and is drawn to her ideas.

The romance with Lalitha angers Pillai, who worries Udayamoorthy’s focus on humanity will derail his musical path. Pillai introduces another man, Charukesi, as a rival disciple to prove his point. A bitter confrontation ensues, and Udayamoorthy ultimately leaves the family home.

During a crisis, Pillai refuses to save a dying man, prioritizing his music program. Udayamoorthy cannot bear the neglect and leaves home to pursue his reforming path outside. This moment cements his break from his father’s shadow and his commitment to public service.

He meets the dead man's wife and learns that the government did not provide compensation. He sees many men trapped in drunkenness with their children forced to work. He vows to eradicate the drinking habit and awaken the village to its dangers.

His reform attempts meet initial resistance as liquor shops challenge him. Lalitha incites the wives of drunkards to protest, and the women join his cause. The momentum begins to turn in his favor as the village sees a possible future.

The wives' protest gains momentum and the couple launch 'Amaidhi Puratchi Iyyakam' (Silent Revolution Movement). They succeed in turning many villagers toward abstinence and education. The village begins to acknowledge Udayamoorthy's leadership and vision.

The MP hears the full story and brings the reforms to government attention. Udayamoorthy becomes famous overnight and receives the Best Indian award from the prime minister for transforming the village. Pillai publicly acknowledges his son’s mission by recognizing the impact of his reformist work.

Pillai discovers that Udayamoorthy is his son and publicly declares it, accepting Lalitha's marriage to his son. He embraces the union and the couple’s reform-minded future. The family ends in harmony as the father’s pride aligns with the son’s mission.
