In the 1960s, Veluthambi, Vimal, is a young graduate who dreams of securing a government job. His father, Annamalai, K. Bhagyaraj, urges him to take a temporary post with an NGO that works to educate rural children, believing this will give him a leg up when a government position opens. Though not initially excited, Velu accepts the assignment and is appointed as a teacher in a small, parched village that lacks even the most basic facilities.
The village exists under the shadow of a powerful landlord named JP, Ponvannan, who owns a brick factory and wields his influence to keep the locals in a fragile, underpaid presence. Velu’s mission is noble: impress upon the villagers the value of education and persuade them to send their children to learn. Yet the people are wary, often looking to JP as a savior despite the evident exploitation that comes with illiteracy and unfair wages.
Madhiarasi, Iniya, runs a small tea shop in the village with her brother, and she soon catches Velu’s eye. Their budding romance adds a personal stake to Velu’s broader quest, giving his work both warmth and its own set of challenges. The children affectionately nick him and the villagers occasionally test his patience with pranks, but Velu remains steadfast in his belief that education can change lives.
As Velu digs deeper, he uncovers a troubling pattern: JP cheats the brickmakers, underpaying them and manipulating the system to keep the villagers dependent and uneducated. At first, many locals resist Velu’s warnings, perceiving JP as a protector who provides jobs and security, even if the pay is low. Velu’s insistence on fair wages and genuine education clashes with entrenched habits and the allure of JP’s apparent “savior” role.
Gradually, the truth sinks in. The villagers demand proper payment for their bricks and begin to recognize the transformative power of education. They start sending their children to Velu’s classroom, and a new sense of pride and possibility takes root in the community. Velu is offered a government job in recognition of his work, but he declines, choosing instead to remain with the NGO because it brings him real satisfaction.
Before long, the NGO faces financial hardship and announces it will close. Velu faces the anxious reality of unemployment, yet the villagers rally to support him, inviting him to stay on as a teacher and agreeing to compensate him directly for his work. In a hopeful turn, Velu and Madhiarasi marry, and the film closes on a note of communal pride: the villagers have embraced education, and Velu’s efforts have helped them build a brighter future together.
