In Mankulam, a small Tamil village in Sri Lanka, M. D. Shyama Nandita Das marries Dileepan J. D. Chakravarthi and becomes pregnant. Against the backdrop of the Sri Lankan Civil War, Dileepan fights alongside other men in the village as part of the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). While they share a quiet moment in the forest, the couple overhears approaching Sri Lankan Army troops. Dileepan urges Shyama to flee, while he stays behind, determined to continue the struggle. As violence swells, the villagers begin fleeing to India, but Shyama clings to the hope that her husband will come for her. Her relatives press her to go for the sake of their unborn child, and they board a rickety boat, battling rough waters. An older man warns that he has seen Dileepan with bullet wounds in the forest. Shyama longs to turn the boat around, but it is too late. After they reach Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, India, Shyama gives birth to a baby girl during refugee processing, yet she leaves the infant behind to return to Sri Lanka, hoping her husband remains alive and that she can continue his path.

Nine years later in Chennai, Amudha P. S. Keerthana grows up with her engineer father Thiruchelvan R. Madhavan, a budding writer who uses the pen name Indira, and her mother Indira Simran, a television newscaster, along with her two younger brothers, Vinay and Akhil. On Amudha’s ninth birthday, Thiruchelvan reveals that she was adopted, a fact that unsettles her while her parents remain convinced they did the right thing. Amudha begins to question her origins, and Indira’s father voices concern about the decision. Despite the tension, Thiruchelvan and Indira stay united, and Amudha’s curiosity only grows as she tries to piece together where she belongs.

To uncover the truth, Amudha secretly travels to Rameswaram with her cousin and discovers her adoption records. The family hastily travels to Sri Lanka after Amudha presses the matter, seeking to find her birth mother, whom Thiruchelvan suspects may be named Shyama. Thiruchelvan enlists the help of Dr. Harold Wickramasinghe Prakash Raj, a Sinhalese friend who guides them through a country torn by conflict. They soon learn that Shyama is Pasupathy’s sister, a fellow LTTE cadre living in hiding, and the search becomes a fragile, personal mission wrapped in danger.

The group waits in a park to meet Shyama, but a battle erupts as the Sri Lankan army targets an LTTE base. Indira is wounded in the arm during the escape, and the family must rely on resilience and quick thinking to survive the chaos. After medical treatment, Amudha apologizes to Indira and asks to return to India. The next day, the family heads toward the airport, but Indira asks them to return to the park for one last meeting. Shyama arrives just in time; in a deeply emotional moment, Amudha presents a photo album and asks Shyama a series of questions she can only partially answer. As the encounter ends, Amudha urges Shyama to come to Chennai with them, but Shyama tearfully declines, saying she has work to complete and that they can only meet again when the land is war-free. The three hug, and Amudha shares a final, grateful kiss with her mother before Shyama departs, leaving Amudha with a mix of relief, longing, and hope for the future.
