In the midst of the Cold War, Joan, a spirited young Australian communist, embarked on a life-changing journey to the Soviet Union as part of a work study program during the 1950s. During her time there, she inadvertently caught the eye of the mysterious Soviet leader, Joseph Stalin, who was on the brink of an unexpected end. Their paths crossed in a heated moment just before his demise, leaving Joan with a profound secret and an unforeseen legacy that would ripple through time.
Upon returning to Australia, Joan learned that she was pregnant and ultimately gave birth to a son, whom she named Joe. Unbeknownst to her, this child’s existence would significantly shape their future. As Joe grew, he found it increasingly difficult to reconcile his mother’s leftist ideals with the stark realities of life in Australia. His chaotic upbringing led him to several encounters with law enforcement and time in prison, where he became privy to vital insights regarding Stalin’s brutal regime from a fellow inmate.
After his release, Joe was determined to forge a new path, free from his past mistakes. It was during this quest for redemption that he met Anna, a stalwart police officer who had previously arrested him multiple times. Anna’s own life had been deeply affected by her heritage as the child of Latvian refugees who escaped from the horrors of Stalin’s Great Purge. As Joe ascended to a prestigious position as the head of Australia’s police union, he and Anna aspired to build a future together, free from the shadows of Joe’s tumultuous history.
Yet, as life often illustrates, secrets have a propensity to emerge. Anna’s eventual revelation about Joe’s true lineage threatened to upend their relationship. Driven by love, she chose initially to keep this deep truth concealed, though she was fully aware that she could never truly grasp its significance. The burden of this secret gradually eroded their bond, leading to a climactic confrontation when the truth finally surfaced, testing their commitment to one another just as they hoped to leave their pasts behind.
