Sisters Penny Lowe, Mamie Van Doren and Jane Lowe, Lori Nelson, are hitchhiking their way toward Los Angeles when a roadside arrest for hitchhiking and skinny-dipping sets the tone for a harsh turn of events. The law sends them to a rural Texas farm owned by a powerful and unscrupulous agricultural magnate, Russ Tropp John Russell. The sentence is presented by Judge Cecilia Steele Tropp, Lurene Tuttle, a woman who is secretly married to Tropp, which adds a private web of influence to the case that will ripple through every decision that follows.

Tropp’s son Bob Don Burnett is hired to work on the farm, and he soon uncovers a troubling pattern: his father has leveraged his relationship with Cecilia to ensure that all convicts serve their sentences at Tropp’s ranch, creating a steady stream of cheap labor while undercutting his rivals. As the truth begins to surface, Bob finds himself torn between filial duty and moral outrage. He also forms a bond with Jane Lowe, and soon the two grow closer as a romance begins to bloom, even as Penny pursues her own dream of stardom beyond the farm’s fences.
