Francis, an aging crime-novelist, arrives in Venice seeking a peaceful year to write. He is immediately drawn to Judith, a beautiful real estate agent who shows him a house reachable only by boat on Sant'Erasmo. Moved by her, he agrees to rent the property if she moves in with him.

Eighteen months later, Francis and Judith are happily married and living on the island of Sant'Erasmo. Their dream setup is idyllic, but Francis's writer's block persists and hampers his productivity. The couple adjusts to each other's routines as the tension of everyday life grows.

Unable to write, Francis roams the streets and canals of Venice in search of inspiration. The city's beauty feels like both a muse and a burden, amplifying his frustration. He struggles to maintain emotional connection with Judith as their quiet life frays.

Alice, Francis's adult daughter, arrives with her ten-year-old daughter Vicky. While swimming with Judith, Alice drifts in the opposite direction and vanishes without explanation. Francis is shaken, fearing for his family as the mystery compounds his isolation.

Vicky is picked up by her father Roger, who becomes involved in the unfolding family turmoil. Francis hires Anna Maria, a vodka-snorting private detective who once had a romantic history with Judith. Anna Maria's presence promises to uncover buried pasts and secrets.

It emerges that Alice is having a passionate affair with Alvise, a penniless aristocrat and small-time heroin dealer. Francis's jealousy deepens as he learns of the affair, widening the gulf between him and Judith. Secrets from the past surface to complicate their marriage.

Judith explains she had many affairs before meeting Francis. Jealousy drives Francis to have Judith followed by Jérémie, Anna Maria's son who has just been released from prison. The act of spying exposes the fragility of their relationship and trust.

Judith eventually sleeps with Jérémie after realizing she is being watched. The betrayal accelerates the breakdown of their marriage, leaving Francis reeling. He confronts the situation with a mix of anger and resignation, unsure how to salvage what remains.

Judith decides to leave Sant'Erasmo and returns to Venice, leaving Francis to face the consequences of their fractured relationship. He accepts the change with trepidation, hoping for some resolution but fearing the end of their life together. The separation marks a turning point for both of them.

In autumn, Jérémie is attacked by a gay man who kills his beloved dog in retaliation. Francis harshly criticizes Jérémie for his past behavior, widening the gap between them. The incident deepens the growing tension around the island and its inhabitants.

Shortly after, Jérémie slashes his wrist in a suicide attempt, and Francis saves him. The intervention initiates a frail reconciliation between the two men. Despite the drama, a sense of time and distance starts to heal some of the wounds.

Anna Maria returns from Paris with news about Alice's disturbing video of herself with Alvise. Alvise is now in prison in Venice, and Anna Maria reveals she has terminal lung cancer. The revelations force the remaining characters to confront painful truths and the fragility of their lives.

In the winter, Alice returns to Venice; she is welcomed by Judith and, with Francis, they make amends. Alice asks her father for forgiveness but remains devoted to Alvise, insisting her daughter is better off with her ex-husband. The family begins to accept the new, imperfect reality.

At Anna Maria's funeral, Jérémie is repeatedly struck by Francis for his lack of feelings toward Anna Maria. The two men reconcile when Jérémie leaves Venice to start a new life, telling Francis that time is on his side. The moment marks a fragile, hopeful balance between them.

Francis finally completes his novel and realizes he has no more reasons to stay in Venice. He runs to see Judith and asks her to move to Paris with him, closing the film on a note of hopeful departure. The couple envisions a new life across the border in Paris.
