The mysterious Patrick Garavan (played by Pierce Brosnan) watches over David Merkin as he lies in a coma after a traumatic car accident. As their bond deepens, David drafts a second work, submitting it anonymously to a young authors competition. He wrestles with the insecurity that he is not worthy of the elegant Annabelle, who is coveted by others for her striking presence as a model. His imagination drifts toward danger as he encounters rumors of secret meetings at a French château and a looming sense of rivalry. He secretly infiltrates the castle, and a pistol he drops discharges, accidentally killing Mark Merylle, a photographer who would later be identified as a rival but was not having an affair with Annabelle.
