45 Years (2015) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Five years after Kate and Geoff Mercer were forced to cancel their 40th wedding anniversary due to Geoff's heart bypass surgery, the affluent, childless couple from Norfolk are gearing up to celebrate their 45th anniversary surrounded by friends at the Assembly House in Norwich. However, their plans take an unexpected turn when Geoff receives a letter revealing that the body of Katya, his former German lover from the early 1960s, has been uncovered in a melting glacier—where she tragically fell into a crevasse during a hike in Switzerland over fifty years ago.

Although Kate has previously learned about Katya from Geoff, she initially appears unfazed by his growing unrest. Geoff explains that he and Katya had posed as a married couple to share a room during the more conservative 1960s, leading the Swiss authorities to regard him as Katya's next of kin.

As the days progress and the anniversary celebrations approach, Geoff's mood darkens, prompting him to revert to smoking. One night, while rummaging through the attic, he looks through memorabilia associated with Katya and hesitantly shares a picture of her with an increasingly agitated Kate, who is struck by the resemblance between herself and Katya when they were younger, both sporting dark hair.

While Geoff is at a reunion luncheon, Kate decides to venture into the attic, where she discovers his scrapbook filled with mementos from his time with Katya, including pressed violets from their last hike together. In addition, she finds a carousel slide projector next to a makeshift screen that showcases their memories in Switzerland. To her horror, Kate discovers slides indicating that Katya was pregnant at the time of her death.

Feeling betrayed, Kate begins smoking again and confronts Geoff about his peculiar behavior after discovering his interest in trips to Switzerland—without disclosing her attic findings. She expresses her belief that many of their life choices have been unwittingly influenced by Katya. Geoff reassures her that their marriage will undergo a "fresh start," which he attempts to demonstrate the following morning by serving breakfast in bed.

The anniversary party takes place in the historic Grand Hall, where Geoff delivers an emotional speech, affirming his love for Kate. As they prepare for their first dance, the same song that played at their wedding—"Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" by The Platters—fills the air. While Geoff exuberantly dances, Kate starts to feel increasingly uncomfortable and stiff. As the song concludes, Geoff raises their hands in celebration, but Kate abruptly pulls her arm down, leaving her feeling isolated amidst the revelery. Despite the joyous occasion, she finds herself alone on the dance floor, contemplating the rift forming between them.

This movie summary FAQ helps explain confusing scenes, plot twists, and narrative decisions in clear, searchable detail.

Q1

Why does Geoff react so strongly to the letter about Katya?

A.

Geoff's intense reaction stems from unresolved grief. Katya was his first love in the early 1960s, and her sudden death in a glacier while hiking cut their relationship short. The letter forces him to confront feelings he never processed, as her body has remained preserved in ice for over fifty years, essentially freezing his emotional state at the moment of loss. This is why he reverts to smoking and becomes withdrawn, as the news has reopened a wound he thought had healed.

Q2

Why does Kate start smoking again after discovering the attic?

A.

Kate resumes smoking as a visible manifestation of her emotional distress. After finding the scrapbook with Katya's pressed violets and discovering Katya was pregnant, Kate feels deeply betrayed by Geoff's decades of secrecy. The smoking signals her psychological unraveling, she is processing feelings of jealousy, inadequacy, and the realization that her husband's past may have unconsciously shaped their entire marriage together.

Q3

Why did Geoff keep Katya's memorabilia hidden in the attic?

A.

Geoff kept the memorabilia as a private emotional anchor to his past. The items, photographs, pressed violets, and slides from their Swiss trip, represent the life he could have had with Katya. By hiding them in the attic rather than discarding them, Geoff maintained a secret connection to his lost love while simultaneously building a life with Kate. This duality reveals his inability to fully commit emotionally to the present, even after 45 years of marriage.

Q4

What does learning Katya was pregnant mean for Kate?

A.

The pregnancy revelation devastates Kate because it suggests Geoff lost not just a lover but potentially a child and an alternate life. Kate realizes that if Katya had survived, Geoff might never have married her, their entire 45-year marriage could be what happened because the first choice was taken away. This forces Kate to question whether Geoff truly chose her or simply settled for the fallback option.

Q5

Why does Kate pull her arm down during their first dance?

A.

Kate's gesture at the end of the first dance represents her final breaking point. While Geoff dances joyfully, believing their marriage has survived the revelation, Kate is overwhelmed by the emotional distance she now feels. The song "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes", which played at their wedding, now feels like a cruel reminder that Geoff's heart may have always been partially elsewhere. Her abrupt pull-away signals her inability to pretend everything is fine for the sake of the celebration.

Q6

Why doesn't Kate tell Geoff she found the attic items?

A.

Kate keeps her attic discovery hidden because she is not ready to confront the full scope of Geoff's deception. By confronting him only about his interest in Switzerland, without revealing she saw the scrapbook, violets, and pregnancy slides, she maintains leverage and observes his response. More importantly, she may be afraid of what his answers would reveal about the foundation of their marriage. The asymmetry of knowledge creates a power shift that Kate is not yet prepared to resolve.

Q7

What does "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" represent in the film?

A.

"Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" serves as the film's emotional anchor, representing the romantic illusions that can obscure truth in a marriage. It was the song at Kate and Geoff's wedding, and playing it at the anniversary creates a sense of循环. The lyrics about smoke blinding people to reality resonate with Kate's dawning realization that she may have never truly known her husband, that the "smoke" of their long marriage has hidden uncomfortable truths about his lingering attachment to Katya.

Q8

Why does Kate say their life choices were influenced by Katya?

A.

Kate's claim reflects her painful realization that her entire life may have been shaped by Geoff's unresolved past. She suspects that decisions about where to live, whether to have children, and how to build their marriage were unconsciously informed by the ghost of Katya. If Geoff lost his first love in Switzerland, perhaps their childlessness, their home choices, or even his heart problems stem from emotional patterns Kate never understood until the letter arrived.

Q9

Why does Kate not accept Geoff's offer of a fresh start?

A.

Kate cannot accept the fresh start because the revelation has fundamentally altered her understanding of their marriage. Geoff's promise of breakfast in bed and affirmations of love feel hollow when she knows he spent decades hiding a pregnant ex-lover's memorabilia above their heads. A fresh start requires honesty about the past, but Geoff still does not know that Kate knows the full truth. Without mutual transparency, Kate cannot genuinely move forward.

Q10

How does the week before the anniversary change Kate and Geoff's relationship?

A.

The week acts as an emotional pressure cooker. Each day brings new revelations that chip away at Kate's security. First the letter, then the photograph showing her resemblance to Katya, then the full scrapbook discovery, and finally the pregnancy revelation. By the time the anniversary arrives, Kate has undergone a complete transformation from a confident wife preparing for celebration to a wounded, suspicious woman who can no longer trust her husband of 45 years.
