Bobby, portrayed by Sean Penn, embarks on a cross-country journey in his Ford convertible. He aims to deliver a gym bag full of cash to Los Angeles as payment for a debt.

Disaster strikes when Bobby's car breaks down on the outskirts of Superior, Arizona, due to a burst radiator hose. With no choice but to leave his car in the hands of mechanic Darrell, Bobby is left stranded.

While wandering around town, Bobby meets Grace, a captivating Latina woman. He flirts with her and helps her carry her purchases, leading to an invitation to her home for a shower.

During his shower at Grace's home, Bobby's true injury is revealed: he lost two fingers as a consequence of his overdue debt. This confession sets the stage for a complicated relationship between them.
