In a taut postwar crime thriller, four men converge on a midnight heist that promises quick cash but spirals into ruthless betrayal. Mike, an injured ex-boxer, is penniless after his wife Angela hands over their life savings to her criminal brother. At the same time, Joe has just lost his clerical job in the USA as he fights to reclaim Mary, his pregnant English wife who struggles with her clingy, unstable mother. Eddie deserts the US Air Force to win back Denise, his actress wife who has been unfaithful. And Rave, a war veteran turned womaniser and gambler, mooches off his rich wife Eve, who dreams of taking him away to Kenya.

Rave has started an affair with a girl who works in a post office that handles consignments of used banknotes. He gathers the other three for a night raid, supplying revolvers as props for show. In a shocking turn, he opens fire on approaching police and, when Mike tries to surrender, shoots him down as well. The three survivors slip away with £100,000, dividing some of it and hiding the rest in a tomb in a churchyard. When Joe is not looking, Rave kills Eddie, but Joe outwits him and escapes.

Collecting his wife Mary, he heads toward the airport for a flight back to the United States. Also waiting there for Rave is his wife Eve, who has booked them a flight to Nairobi. Joe spots Rave arrive and shoots him, but in the fall Rave shoots Joe in turn. All four men have died, leaving no one alive who knows where the money is hidden.
