In March 1983, a cataclysmic event bombarded Earth with cosmic rays, granting superpowers to sociopaths and creating a wave of super-villains known as the Miscreants. Ordinary citizens found themselves gripped by fear, living their lives under the looming threat of these powerful foes. After a Miscreant brutally murders her parents, renowned geneticists, young Emily Stanton (Octavia Spencer) resolves to find a way to combat these formidable adversaries.
Fast forward to 1985, Emily has sacrificed her social life for an obsessive quest to devise methods to confront the Miscreants. Despite the ensuing bullying she faces, Lydia Berman (Melissa McCarthy), with her unique brand of loyalty and carefree demeanor, rises to defend her. Lydia, though not the brightest, becomes Emily’s steadfast ally, supporting her bold vision to bestow superpowers on ordinary people while also ensuring Emily takes care of herself. However, after a mishap where Lydia encourages Emily to take a brief nap, she inadvertently causes Emily to miss an important AP exam, which places strain on their friendship and drives them apart.
By 2024, their paths have diverged drastically. Emily has blossomed into a successful scientist and heads her own research company, while Lydia has taken a more traditional route as a longshoreman. The two share concerns over the persistent threat of the Miscreants, pondering over what the other has been up to. When the high school reunion approaches, Lydia invites Emily in hopes of reconnecting. Unfortunately, Emily forgets the date and is consumed by a work project, ultimately leading to a fateful accident. In a series of events where Lydia spills beer on Emily’s equipment, she accidentally injects herself with a serum designed to grant super strength.
Ex-CIA operative Allie (Melissa Leo), who has been instrumental in establishing Emily’s lab, is there to clarify the consequences of this mishap. The serum gives Lydia superhuman strength, but the process requires rigorous training and carries the risk of extreme danger. Emily too takes part, choosing a pill form of the serum for invisibility. During the grueling thirty-three-day training, their bond deepens, though Lydia struggles with a unique dietary requirement—only eating raw meat.
As their training progresses, Lydia learns that Emily has a daughter, Tracy (Taylor Mosby), whom she had with a fellow researcher who ultimately couldn’t shoulder the responsibility of family life. They share playful moments, bonding over video games while navigating the challenges of their new abilities. The duo, now known as Thunder Force, begins their crime-fighting journey by thwarting a robbery led by a Miscreant named The Crab (Jason Bateman). In a shocking twist, The Crab finds himself captivated by Lydia, much to Emily’s discomfort.
With newfound fame, Thunder Force attracts the attention of mayoral candidate William “The King” Stevens (Bobby Cannavale), whose dubious campaign promises aim to eradicate the Miscreant threat. Unbeknownst to the public, The King secretly employs both The Crab and Laser (Pom Klementieff), a dangerous Miscreant with energy manipulation abilities. As the electoral race heats up, The King pressures Thunder Force to join his cause, leaving the city vulnerable unless he wins.
Conflict ensues when Laser ambushes the duo during a diner outing, provoking a splinter in their friendship again as Lydia’s reckless actions lead to collateral damage. In a bid to mend relations, Lydia dates The Crab to gather crucial intel. She learns of The King’s malevolent plan to detonate a bomb targeting everyone who opposed him during the election. With this vital knowledge, Lydia reconciles with Emily, laying the foundation for the showdown that follows.
In the climatic confrontation, Thunder Force faces off against The King, revealing his true nature as a Miscreant far more powerful than they anticipated. Just as The King prepares to vanquish Lydia, The Crab turns against him, catalyzing a chaotic tussle. Tracy, now empowered, joins the fray, adding critical support. Despite their combined efforts succeeding in overcoming The King, they discover that the bomb is set to detonate imminently.
In a heart-wrenching twist, Lydia decides to sacrifice herself to protect the city, leaping into the Chicago River with the bomb, surrounded by a blaze of destruction. Miraculously, first responders manage to save her, leading to a renewed alliance between the two women. Thunder Force emerges stronger than ever, with a newly fortified friendship, and accept a proposal from the mayor to gain assistance from the city’s resources as they continue their mission against the Miscreants.

Still wondering what the ending of Thunder Force (2021) really means? Here’s a spoiler-heavy breakdown of the final scene, major twists, and the deeper themes that shape the film’s conclusion.
The ending of “Thunder Force” reveals that the main villain, known as The King, was actually a Miscreant himself, who used the chaos of his own creation to manipulate and control the situation for his benefit. His plan was to spread terror and then exploit the fear to stay in power, including hosting a fake celebration to secretly detonate a bomb intended to kill his enemies and voters. Throughout the climax, the two hero friends, Emily and Lydia, work together to stop him. They manage to defeat The King, but the bomb is still active and will explode imminently. In a daring move, Lydia sacrifices herself by jumping off a building into the water, holding the bomb. Her hope is that her superhuman strength will either absorb the impact or at least save the people from destruction. Miraculously, Lydia survives the fall, and her sacrifice prevents a disaster, bringing justice to the Miscreants and saving the day. This act of heroism underscores the film’s message of friendship, bravery, and selflessness, even in a parody-style superhero setting. The story ends with the assumption that the threat from the Miscreants, notably Laser, has been contained, but the possibility of future battles remains open, hinting at a potential sequel. Overall, the ending emphasizes the importance of friendship and sacrifice in overcoming evil, even if the film itself was criticized for its lack of depth.
