What Happens in Superwho?: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Superwho? (2021) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Cédric Dugimont is a struggling actor facing a series of misfortunes as he tries to carve out his niche in the entertainment industry. His most notable work thus far involves appearing in advertisements for a brand of small-sized condoms. However, his fortunes take an unexpected turn when he is offered the lead role in a superhero film titled Badman, following the tragic demise of the initial star who was killed in an accident celebrating the film's announcement.

After months of rigorous training, Cédric embarks on filming alongside the well-known actor Alain Belmont, who portrays Badman's archenemy, Le Clown. However, just after wrapping up his first day on set, Cédric receives distressing news that his father, police chief Michel Dugimont, has collapsed unexpectedly. Wearing his Badman costume under a jacket, Cédric hastily drives the Badmobile to the hospital. Unfortunately, a malfunctioning prop explosive in the trunk leads to a chaotic crash through a nearby bank.

Upon awakening, Cédric finds himself afflicted with amnesia but soon becomes convinced he is Badman after seeing film props in his car. This misbelief leads him to attack two police officers near a lake before he makes a sudden escape. During this tumultuous time, he is taken in by a family who offers him shelter for the night. Intrigued by the plot, he activates a prop watch that plays a recorded scene of Le Clown holding Badman's wife and child hostage, further entrenching him in this fictional world.

Determined to confront the supposed villain, Cédric embarks on a mission to Le Clown's hideout in Vaucresson, which he discovers to be Belmont's actual residence. Along the way, Cédric gets a ride from Laure Laville, a news reporter, but they are sidetracked when they encounter a bank heist perpetrated by the notorious Le Schizo and his gang. When one of Le Schizo's henchmen attempts to abduct Laure, Cédric instinctively taps into his superhero persona to subdue the criminal, after which he drives off with Laure, only to leave her behind moments later.

As Cédric finds himself on the run from Le Schizo and his crew, he sneaks into Belmont's mansion, where he stumbles upon a birthday celebration. It is here that he realizes that the supposed captives of Badman's family are, in fact, Belmont's actual wife and son. In a misguided twist of fate, Cédric kidnaps Belmont's son, seeking refuge in a barn, but soon finds himself knocked unconscious by his father Michel. Michel, upon recognizing his son, allows Cédric to escape to safety.

With the help of his sister Éléonore and friends Adam and Seb, Cédric is facilitated back to the studio where they desperately try to rekindle his memories. Just as Cédric has a breakthrough in recollection, Le Schizo confronts him about the failed robbery. In a riveting showdown, Cédric uses a grappling hook to disarm Le Schizo, inadvertently sending his gun flying into the adjacent studio. After an intense battle, Cédric manages to subdue Le Schizo and leaves him for Michel and the police to take into custody.

The following day, Cédric visits Laure and discovers that she is his former girlfriend, leading to a heartfelt reconnection. In an odd twist, the news mentions that Tom Cruise is accidentally shot during the filming of a Mission: Impossible sequel. As the world premiere of Badman unfolds, Cédric acknowledges his father's retirement from active duty as a police officer, concluding with a triumphant scene from the film where Badman overcomes Le Clown and rescues his family.

Superwho? Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Superwho? (2021): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

How does Cédric end up with amnesia and believing he's actually Badman?

While rushing to the hospital after learning his father collapsed, Cédric is still wearing his Badman costume and driving the Badmobile. A malfunctioning prop explosive in the trunk detonates, causing him to crash the vehicle through a nearby bank. When he wakes up, his memory is gone, and seeing the superhero props still inside the car convinces him that the role of Badman is his real identity, kicking off the entire identity confusion in Superwho?.

Foreshadowing: The script sets the trap early by having Cédric drive to the hospital in full costume, ensuring the props would be with him at the moment of the crash.

Q2

Why does Cédric kidnap Belmont's son?

Still believing he is Badman, Cédric watches a prop recording on his watch that shows Le Clown holding Badman's wife and child hostage. When he breaks into Alain Belmont's mansion and sees the man's family celebrating a birthday, he misreads the scene as Le Clown's hideout and assumes the child is the hostage he needs to rescue. Believing he is following the movie's plot in real life, he takes the boy and flees to a barn.

Foreshadowing: The prop watch scene shown earlier at the family's home primes Cédric to interpret any child he finds as a captive in need of rescue.

Q3

Why does Cédric attack the police officers at the lake?

Fresh out of his amnesia-fueled belief that he is Badman, Cédric mistakes the two officers for ordinary criminals or villains. Because he is fully committed to his new superhero identity, he reacts with the aggressive instincts his on-screen training drilled into him, attacking the officers before fleeing the scene. The beat is played for slapstick, with Cédric acting on a delusion rather than any real threat.

Foreshadowing: His immediate post-crash behavior at the lake foreshadows how deeply the Badman role will override his normal judgment.

Q4

Who is Le Schizo and how does he fit into Cédric's story?

Le Schizo is a criminal leader of a separate gang who is attempting a bank heist that Cédric stumbles into while riding with reporter Laure Laville. Le Schizo is not part of the Badman movie at all. He becomes a real threat after Cédric foils part of his robbery, and he later tracks Cédric down at the studio to confront him about the failed heist, where Cédric finally subdues him for the police.

Q5

Why does Michel knock Cédric unconscious but then help him escape?

Police chief Michel Dugimont finds his own son hiding in a barn while still wearing the Badman costume, and not knowing his identity at first, he strikes him to subdue him. Once he recognizes Cédric, he shifts from cop to father, helping his confused son slip away from the scene rather than arresting him. His choice prioritizes family over procedure, which sets up the later studio rescue.

Q6

How does Cédric defeat Le Schizo at the studio?

Just as Cédric's memories start returning at the studio, Le Schizo confronts him about the foiled bank robbery. Cédric uses a prop grappling hook from the Badman set to disarm Le Schizo, knocking the gun into the adjacent studio. After a brief fight, Cédric subdues Le Schizo and leaves him tied up for Michel and the police to collect, finally turning his movie training into a real victory.

Foreshadowing: His earlier instinctive takedown of Le Schizo's henchman during the bank heist previewed the skills he would use in the final showdown.

Q7

What is the past relationship between Cédric and Laure?

Laure Laville is the news reporter who gives Cédric a ride while he is still convinced he is Badman. The film only reveals their history the day after the studio showdown, when Cédric visits her and discovers she is actually his ex-girlfriend. Their reconnection during the chaos of his amnesia, followed by that reveal, turns their odd road-trip dynamic into a romantic reconciliation by the premiere.

Foreshadowing: Laure's willingness to pick up a stranger in a superhero suit hints at a pre-existing familiarity between them.

Q8

How does Cédric originally land the lead role in Badman?

Cédric was already a struggling actor whose biggest credit was a commercial for small-sized condoms. He gets his big break only because the original star of the Badman film dies in an accident while celebrating the movie's announcement. With the production suddenly needing a replacement, Cédric is offered the lead role and undergoes months of training before stepping onto set opposite Alain Belmont.

Q9

What is the prop watch scene and why does it affect Cédric?

While staying with the family that takes him in, Cédric comes across a prop watch that plays a recorded scene of Le Clown holding Badman's wife and child hostage. Because he already believes he is Badman, he treats this recorded movie clip as a real threat against his supposed family. The scene is what drives him to chase Le Clown's supposed hideout in Vaucresson, making it a key trigger for the rest of the plot.

Foreshadowing: The watch scene plants the idea of a hostage that Cédric will later 'rescue' by kidnapping Belmont's son.

Q10

What happens at the world premiere of Badman at the end?

The premiere serves as the film's happy ending wrap-up. Cédric publicly acknowledges his father Michel's retirement from active police duty, reconciles with his ex-girlfriend Laure, and the screening itself shows the climactic scene of Badman defeating Le Clown and rescuing his family. A quick news gag about Tom Cruise being accidentally shot during a Mission: Impossible sequel plays in the background, leaning into the film's celebrity parody tone.

Being surrounded by the props, costumes, and sets he trained on is what gradually triggers his real memories to return, just in time for Le Schizo to arrive and force him into the final fight.
