Sherman ‘Tank’ Turner, portrayed by Dany Boon, is a charming help line operator known for his unique method of winning back lost love for his clients. His approach is both unorthodox and manipulative: he takes heartbroken men’s money to arrange disastrous dates for their former girlfriends, convincing them that their past flames weren’t so bad after all. With a knack for bad decisions, Tank guarantees that his antics, which include recklessly bad driving, cringe-worthy stories about his personal life (like how he once dated a pregnant ex-sister), and dilapidated dining experiences, will ultimately lead the women back to their exes.
Living with his step-cousin Dustin, played by Daniel Auteuil, who is hopelessly infatuated with his colleague Alexis, Tank finds himself embroiled in a web of romantic confusion. Dustin has expressed his feelings to Alexis, portrayed by Julie Gayet, but she prefers to remain just friends, despite their five-week relationship lacking any physical intimacy. As Alexis prepares for a marathon, she unknowingly becomes part of Tank’s attempts at playing cupid gone wrong.
When Dustin reluctantly sees Alexis flirting with another coworker, he seeks Tank’s help, initially refusing to accept his cousin’s involvement but eventually succumbing to pressure. They plan a disastrous date where Tank, meddling as usual, behaves rudely while Alexis, under the influence of alcohol, is oblivious to his misdeeds. After a wild night out, which includes a visit to a strip club, Alexis decides to explore her options. However, even amidst her exploration, she finds herself entangled with Tank.
As their physical relationship develops, Alexis starts to recognize her feelings for both Tank and Dustin, leading to emotional upheaval for all involved. Tank’s world begins to unravel when Dustin’s attempts to win back Alexis bring them both unwanted turmoil. A cringe-worthy date with a woman who turns out to be an orthodox Christian makes Tank rethink his actions, after which he takes the courage to confess his feelings for Alexis.
In a moment of clarity, he invites her to prom, rekindling the burgeoning relationship as they share laughter and joy. However, complications arise at Alexis’s sister’s wedding where, through the chaos of poor behavior and sabotaged relationships, Tank’s feelings are driven to a breaking point. He creates a disaster of unimaginable proportions, unwittingly exposing his true nature and further driving a wedge between himself and Alexis.
As the story unfolds, Tank learns invaluable lessons about love, friendship, and the consequences of deceitful actions. Despite a rocky path filled with petty arguments and physical confrontations, both he and Alexis go through a transformation, culminating in a series of comedic yet heartfelt attempts at compromise and acceptance of each other’s flaws.
The story reaches its fervent climax when, after some time apart, Tank realizes his affections for Alexis are genuine. In a grand gesture filled with humor and sincerity, he approaches her during a date, only for them to engage in a playful battle filled with insults and laughter. Through their banter, they discover an undeniable chemistry that triumphs over their earlier mistakes.
By the end, as the credits roll, a hint suggests that Dustin might be on the way to connecting with Alexis’s roommate, leaving viewers with a sense of unresolved possibilities and new beginnings. The film captures the rollercoaster of love and the unpredictability of relationships, entertaining audiences with its mix of comedy, romance, and heartfelt moments.
