As Daniel Lucas emerges from the confines of prison after serving time for a past misstep, his quest for redemption is quickly derailed by the reckless antics of Ned Perry, a well-meaning yet bumbling thief. In a desperate attempt to fund treatment for his ailing daughter, Meg, Ned drags Lucas into a disastrous bank heist, making him an unwitting accomplice.
Enter Detective Marvin Dugan, whose rash judgments lead him to suspect that Lucas and Ned are in cahoots. What follows is a whirlwind of high-stakes chases, comical misadventures, and a string of misunderstandings as Lucas fights to free himself from Ned’s clumsy grip while simultaneously trying to clear his own name.
Throughout their chaotic journey, the two former adversaries unexpectedly unite in their goal to help Meg regain her voice. Their escapades take them from the stifling environment of a care home to the vast open roads, adopting new identities as a married couple with a young son along the way.
Ned’s ill-fated attempt to exchange currency at a Canadian bank leads to yet another twist of fate: he becomes a hostage to another would-be robber. This peculiar turn allows Lucas to sustain his bond with Meg, whom he now considers a kindred spirit amidst the pandemonium of their lives.
In this unpredictable tapestry woven from fate and circumstance, Lucas’s relentless pursuit of redemption becomes intertwined with Ned’s desperate measures to support his daughter. Together, they confront the repercussions of their actions and, in the process, establish an unlikely but profound friendship.
