In the opening scene, we find Charlie (Dax Shepard) and Annie (Kristen Bell) in the intimacy of their bedroom, sharing tender moments. However, under the surface, Annie is grappling with significant stress. Charlie encourages her to focus solely on their current moment together, promising his lifelong commitment. This heartfelt moment brings tears to Annie’s eyes, highlighting her emotional vulnerability.
As the day unfolds, Annie heads to the local university for a meeting with her boss, Debby (Kristin Chenoweth). On her way, she encounters Randy (Tom Arnold), who makes a clumsy introduction while spilling coffee all over himself. In his chaotic attempt to follow Annie, he unintentionally causes mayhem, shooting up a van and a nearby house as he tries to prevent a potential threat to some children. Charlie is understandably furious when he witnesses Randy’s antics.
Meanwhile, Annie sits down with Debby, who delivers inspiring news: an opportunity to establish an entire department centered on conflict resolution at a larger university in Los Angeles. Annie is torn between this career-defining chance and the reality that Charlie is in Witness Protection and unable to leave their current location. Although Debby expresses her frustrations about the past, it becomes clear to Annie that this position could significantly elevate her career.
Back home, Charlie confronts Randy about the morning’s events. Randy reveals he has been demoted due to previous mishaps involving his firearm. Their banter is filled with tension as Charlie attempts to take Randy’s gun away for safety. The night turns into a brainstorming session for Charlie and Annie as they weigh the pros and cons of her job offer. Deep down, Charlie knows he would feel guilty if Annie let go of her dreams for him.
The next morning, Charlie makes a bold move and unveils a hidden car, driving straight to the university to meet Annie. Upon his arrival, he surprises her by agreeing to accompany her to LA, despite the risks involved. As they begin to pack for their journey, it becomes evident that she will need her teaching certificate, tucked away at her ex-boyfriend Gil’s house ([Michael Rosenbaum]).
At Gil’s place, old wounds resurface. He tries to win Annie back while expressing his mistrust towards Charlie. After some tense exchanges, they manage to retrieve the certificate, but not without Gil expressing his concerns. On their way to LA, Charlie reveals the emotional connection he has with the car, sharing how he and his father worked on it together, making it a piece of his past that he treasures.
During their journey, they encounter myriad people, including Terry ([Jess Rowland]) and Angela ([Carly Hatter]), two police officers who inadvertently get dragged into all this as they attempt to track down Charlie’s intended path. Meanwhile, madness ensues with Randy chasing after the couple under false pretenses, adding more complications to their road trip.
Stopping at a gas station leads to an exchange filled with sexual innuendo when a redneck ([David Koechner]) gets involved. After surviving a shocking night at a motel, which involves a chaotic mix-up, Charlie finally admits that his real name is Yul Perkins, and the truth about his life as a getaway driver starts to unravel. As tensions rise, Annie struggles with the revelation of Charlie’s past and his connection with Neve ([Joy Bryant]), rekindling old feelings of betrayal.
Things take a dark turn when Gil reappears, trying to prevent Annie from leaving again, leading to a violent encounter. In a thrilling car chase filled with danger and determination, they evade catastrophe as they dash between confrontations with Alex ([Bradley Cooper]) and his crew.
Following several hair-raising incidents, including a dramatic showdown at Charlie’s father’s farm, Charlie and Annie manage to escape and escape capture from Alex once and for all. With love re-ignited amidst chaos, Charlie is determined to get Annie to her interview on time.
Despite everything, they arrive just when it counts, and Charlie reassures her of his commitment with the same phrase that moved her at the start of the film. As she walks into her interview, filled with renewed hope, their relationship is solidified.
In a post-credits scene, Randy and Terry are now seen preparing for a new chapter in their lives. Meanwhile, Annie’s interview takes a humorous turn as she enters a room filled with smoke, coming face to face with her destiny. The charming exchange showcases her talents as she wins the position of heading her department, marking the end of a tumultuous journey filled with love, bravery, and the promise of new beginnings.
