The Broken

Gina McVey, a successful radiologist, begins by examining X-rays of a patient with Situs Inversus, a rare condition where internal organs are mirrored. The scene establishes her medical expertise and the unusual condition that will echo throughout the plot. The setting is a hospital radiology department during the day.

Gina, her boyfriend Stefan, her brother Daniel and his girlfriend Kate surprise John for his birthday. The party is interrupted when a previously knocked-over mirror shatters, foreshadowing unsettling events to come. The moment takes place at John’s residence during the birthday celebration.

The next day at work, Gina's assistant Anthony claims he saw her walking out of the building, even though she insists she was inside all day. This odd contradiction hints at a doppelganger or impostor scenario. The exchange happens in the hospital setting where she works.

On her way home, Gina spots a woman who looks exactly like her driving a car identical to hers. She follows the woman to a flat and finds a photo of herself with her father. Terrified, Gina flees and later collides head-on with another car, losing consciousness.

Gina wakes in a hospital with no memory of the accident. Dr. Robert Zachman is introduced as her therapist, beginning a sequence of examinations and uncertainties. After release, Stefan takes her back to his flat.

Back at Stefan's flat, Gina notices his mirror is missing and he explains he broke it by accident. Stefan's demeanor shifts, becoming colder and less emotionally available. The unsettling change deepens Gina's sense that something is not right.

Gina investigates a ceiling leak in the attic and experiences unease as Stefan appears colder. She sleeps fitfully and has flashbacks of her father's birthday, the crash, and eerie, otherworldly scenes including a disturbing sexual encounter. The memories push her toward questioning reality.

Dr. Zachman suggests that Gina may be experiencing Capgras delusion, a rare impostor syndrome linked to brain injury and memory loss. He prescribes further tests and recommends that Gina visit her wrecked car for clues. This medical interpretation introduces a psychological lens to the mystery.

Gina goes to the auto shop to inspect her car and finds the photo from the woman's flat. Two identical dogs fight beside a broken mirror, amplifying the sense that doubles are everywhere. The encounter deepens the mystery surrounding who she really is.

Gina visits John at the American Embassy and shows him the photo, sparking worry about the people around her. Later, the secretary notes seeing him on the street, yet John claims he never left his office, and he discovers a broken mirror in the Embassy’s restroom.

Kate returns home to find a dark, shadowy version of her house and is murdered by a woman who looks just like her. The parallel world exerts deadly consequences as the doubles grow more dangerous. The tragedy unfolds in Kate's home.

Gina, at the subway, is nearly hit by a train while clinging to a crucial photo that could prove her story. She speaks with her father on the phone, who hints at uncertainty about his own identity. The moment nudges Gina toward a crucial realization about doubles.

Gina returns to Stefan's flat only to find him dead, his head smashed on a pipe. A man who looks like John appears in the shadows, suggesting impostors are everywhere. The discovery amplifies the urgency to uncover the truth behind the doubles.

Gina locks herself in the bathroom, but she escapes through the window as a Stefan-lookalike pursues her. She remembers the moment of truth: she had murdered the real Gina by placing a plastic bag over her head, and she herself has been replaced by a mirror-doppelgänger with Situs Inversus. The film ends with Mirror Gina driving away, smiling eerily.
