Hope Heather Graham is a night shift waitress who has made several mistakes in her life. She leaves Ohio for Los Angeles, hoping to carve out a living as an entertainer. The film jumps back and forth between her arrival in LA and her present life behind the counter. She meets Will Jeremy Sisto when she arrives, and in the present he is desperate to win her back. They descend into drugs. Hope realizes she must break free if she wants her dream to come true, so she cuts off all ties with Will.
After breaking away from Will, while Hope is working one day, she encounters Sara Jessica Stroup, who comes in with two guys and places their order before heading to the back with Sara following. It is revealed that Sara is using the same drugs Hope once used with Will, and it’s Sara’s first time trying them. Their session moves to the two guys’ house, where Sara explains they are club owners who want them to do more together. Sara confesses she doesn’t want to be alone or with the guys, and says she will wait for Hope to finish work so they can go back to Sara’s place.
As they talk, Sara probes Hope about whether she has a boyfriend; Hope says no. Sara reveals she does have one and is considering breaking up, but she feels she can love more than one person and attempts to kiss Hope. Hope declines, telling Sara she needs to get back to work, and Sara becomes embarrassed, calling herself stupid before Hope reassures her not to think that way. That moment leads to a kiss between them, and Hope recalls her past with Will.
Hope returns to her job and continues to interact with others. Meanwhile, Will is willing to go to any length to keep them together—murder, robbing her workplace, and taking her hostage. In a final turn, the drama shifts as Hope is shown among customers rather than her usual patrons, with one of the customers identified as the waitress.
