The World’s Greatest Athlete

Sam Archer [John Amos] and his assistant Milo Jackson [Tim Conway] are coaches at Merrivale College. They have lost every game in every sport they’ve coached, which raises the concern of Dean Maxwell [Billy De Wolfe], the head of the Alumni Association. With only one year left on his contract, Archer decides he needs a vacation, and the pair heads to Zambia in Southern Africa to unwind and clear their heads.

On a safari with their guide Morumba [Don Pedro Colley], they glimpse a Tarzan-like jungle boy named Nanu [Jan-Michael Vincent], who can outrun a cheetah in full bound. The moment is electrifying, and the coaches quickly pull out recruitment papers, hoping to turn this exceptional young talent into gleaming glory. But they run into Gazenga [Roscoe Lee Browne], Nanu’s godfather and spiritual leader, who believes that pulling Nanu into the fast-paced world of US college athletics would disrupt his sacred path and spiritual development. Despite Gazenga’s warnings, Archer and Jackson press forward, and Nanu arrives at Merrivale with his companion, a Bengal tiger named Harry, ready to compete.

From here, the film weaves together slapstick humor and suspense as Nanu’s potential—his destiny as the “World’s Greatest Athlete”—draws heat from powerful people who are used to getting their way. The clash among innocence (Nanu), Archer’s scheming, Jackson’s ineptitude, Gazenga’s ancient wisdom, and the cold machinations of the villains propels the story toward the climactic track meet. The stakes are amplified by the rival’s schemes to derail Nanu’s ascent, while Nanu’s growing bond with a love interest, Jane Douglas, provides a human counterpoint to the chaos around him. Jane [Dayle Haddon] helps Nanu navigate this strange new world, and their budding romance adds an emotional core to the high-pressure competition.

The track meet itself is a showcase, with a tense broadcast that heightens the drama—ABC-TV’s own Howard Cosell [Howard Cosell] providing the on-field commentary as Nanu races against the odds. As the crowd roars and the victory becomes inevitable, Nanu decides to return home, accompanied by Jane and Harry the tiger, while Archer and Jackson bid him farewell at the airport, their own future uncertain but hopeful. In a final framing moment, the two coaches are shown pursuing another athletic prodigy—this time in China—hinting that their adventures in scouting extraordinary talent will continue beyond Merrivale.
