Joe Waters [Joe Pesci] and Gus Green [Danny Glover] are two cheerful, hard-working friends and longtime neighbors in modest Newark, New Jersey life. Their bond goes back to childhood, and their shared love of fishing gives them a simple joy that shapes their days. When a stroke of luck lands them a trip to the Florida Everglades for some angling, they seize the chance, dreaming of fresh catches and a chance to unwind, with a pledge to return home in time for Thanksgiving. Their plan is straightforward: a peaceful escape that honors their friendship and their easygoing, blue-collar rhythm of life.

On the road to their vacation, a seemingly ordinary stop at a local restaurant sets off a cascade of unexpected trouble. An Englishman, Martin—Dekker Massey [Nick Brimble], a con artist with a dangerous air—steals Joe’s car keys and slips away, leaving the two friends stranded. Their attempt to stay calm is short-lived: a bump in the road disconnects their boat from the car, stranding them once more. A fateful encounter with two women, Rita [Rosanna Arquette] and Angie [Lynn Whitfield], who are chasing after Martin, offers a lifeline in the form of a ride. But the journey grows more ridiculous and perilous as the boat becomes tangled with a train, pulling away with their beer, supplies, and a sense that their simple trip has spiraled into something far larger than they imagined.

The pair end up hitching a ride with two men, only to spot their car at a gas station later. Joe confronts Martin in a bathroom, but his caution wins out when he sees Martin loading a gun. They flee, a blood-stained knife left in the car’s dashboard a disturbing clue. That night they sleep in a trailer park, where a television documentary reveals the truth they’re already starting to suspect: Dekker Massey is a wanted criminal who has duped several women, leaving a trail of riches, danger, and likely a hidden stash. While rummaging through the trunk, Joe uncovers a map that supposedly leads to Dekker’s hidden fortune, turning their accidental misadventure into a treasure hunt they can’t resist. They book a room at a nearby hotel, and during dinner, Rita and Angie close in, pressing them about Dekker. The pair reveal they’re pursuing Dekker because Rita’s mother was one of his victims, and they propose to help bring him to justice.
