The story tightens to a painful close as MacFarlane strains to pull himself free from the weight of Winter’s body and continues to move forward, only to be struck down just as the trench lines finally give way to the advance. In the end, the assault dissolves into a sea of fallen figures, with MacFarlane himself meeting the same grim fate as the others around him, a stark, unflinching image of the war’s inexorable human cost.
