In 1918, in France during the last months of the First World War, four infantrymen—the Bavarian, played by Fritz Kampers, a young man known as “the Student,” played by Hans-Joachim Moebis, Karl, played by Gustav Diessl, and the Lieutenant, played by Claus Clausen—spend a stretch of rest days behind the front. The Student falls in love with a French peasant girl, Yvette, setting a quiet ember of tenderness against the harsh backdrop of war. Back at the front, the four endure the dirt, the claustrophobic fear of trench warfare, and the ever-present threat of death that shadows their every move.

The group experiences moments of danger and solidarity as the war presses on. The Bavarian, Karl, and the Lieutenant become trapped when part of the trench collapses, and the Student digs them out, proving his steadiness under pressure. Later, a disastrous misjudgment of distance leads to friendly artillery fire, and the same Student risks his life again to relay crucial instructions to the crews setting the firing range, effectively saving his companions from a deadly misunderstanding.

Karl returns on leave to a hometown that has withered under hardship, only to find his wife in bed with a butcher. Bitter and disillusioned, he heads back to the front, leaving behind a wife’s betrayal that gnaws at him. In his absence, the Student is stabbed during a melee; his body lies in the mud of a shell-hole with one hand still protruding, a stark image of how war erases individuality and leaves only traces behind.

An Allied offensive erupts, aided by tanks, and a vast number of French Poilus push through the thin German defenses. During the ensuing defense, Karl and the Bavarian suffer serious injuries while trying to shield their remaining comrades. The Lieutenant experiences a catastrophic breakdown, slipping into madness and shouting a relentless “Hurrah,” as he salutes a pile of corpses. He is carried toward a field hospital along with Karl and the Bavarian, where the chaos of war swirls around a growing crowd of injured men.

In a feverish moment, Karl glimpses his wife again and mutters, “We are all to blame!” He dies with his hand still hanging out, the grim image underscoring the sense that blame hangs over every participant in the conflict. Beside him, a wounded French Poilu reaches for Karl’s hand and softly says, “Comrades, not enemies,” a quiet testament to shared humanity amid the war’s wreckage. The ending arrives with a stark, interrogative note displayed on the screen: The End?!

“Hurrah” non-stop

The film layers personal loyalties, love, and stubborn endurance against the inexorable machinery of war, placing ordinary soldiers at the center of extraordinary ordeals. It captures both fleeting tenderness—such as the Student’s connection to Yvette—and the bleak, unglamorous realities of the trenches. The narrative moves with a quiet, unadorned gravity, reframing acts of courage and moments of weakness as part of a larger, unending cycle of struggle. Through the intertwined fates of these four men, the story probes questions about duty, memory, and the high cost of conflict, inviting viewers to reflect on the line between comradeship and survival in the heat of battle.
